I've been playing 40k for awhile now. I have an Imperial Guard army that I've been looking to expand. Recently I managed to get ahead of my money So I can invest $400 in more 40k.
I have the choice of picking up a Thudd Gun Battery with Centaurs, Grenadiers, and a Command Squad made of Death Korp Forgeworld models as well as the necessary books.
OR
I could pick up a Tau assault Cadre, the codex, a piranha, kroot, and crisis suits for the same amount of money.

I would like the Forgeworld models, but I'd only get 3 transports, 2 elites, and a command squad.

Whereas I could pick up an Entire Tau army.

What do you think is the Better choice?

Seeing as how you already have IG, I'd go with Tau. Especially if you're looking to try something new. Though if you really like the Guard, Krieg would make a nice supplement to an existing army.

It really depends on what you want. Do you want a whole new army with a different (though still shooty) feel? Or do you want to expand your current army with some pretty incredible models?

IMHO (and this is just my personal feelings) - I wouldn't buy DKoK for myself unless I felt I could do them justice with a proper paintjob. As I'm not much of a painter, I don't feel they're worth my money as I can't make 'em look as nice as the models deserve.

I'd say Tau army is better then some Transports and a Command squad with no troops to command. If you want to do DKoK save up another $400~600 to get the troops and heavy weapon teams.

I wouldn't invest that much into a new guard army until after the new IG codex comes out. In the meantime load up on the new orks.

He will need 100+ Guardsmen. Might as well start painting now...

Tru dat, yo. That's why I'm trying to get a head start now. If I start now, I might actually have a completed army by the time IG get decent rules.

I would say go with Tau as you will get so much more for your money.

If you really want death korps, as great as the FW models are, I would say wait until the new IG stuff is officially announced because you never know, they could be coming to plastic.. those rumors of "great coat guard" never go away.

That said I also invested in 2 units of DK grenadiers for my cadian guard army. They're painted in the same colors and actually fit well together IMO. You can easily tell they're not your standard tropper at just a glance so it makes it easier to tell the units apart in the heat of battle.

Tau are a fun army to paint- dont know if that factors into your consideration, but I have acouple squads of them just b/c I wanted to paint some up.

I just got a Tau army but I am a loyal guardsman... Good luck on this one and keep us posted.

Frankly, it really comes down to quantity (Tau) vs. quality (DKoK). Which do you want more?

I think for now I'll go with the Tau. That way I'll have two full armies. Then I can expand my IG more when I get the next cash flow. Death Korps are nice, but for now I'll go with the Tau.

I have both and my suggestions are:

1. Are you made of money? If yes, DKoK. You can't just stop at a few vehicles.
2. Do you consider yourself primarily a great painter in the military modeller mold? If yes, DKoK.
3. Do you consider yourself a modeler/converter? If so, Tau.
4. Do you transport your entire army every time you play? If so, Tau. DKoK details break just looking at them.

Do you want to try something different than you currently have? Try Tau.

When you come to the Death Korps take a look at the Pig Iron Kolony range. It would be a cheap (unofficial) way of building up your basic troops figures.
