Hey there, these are just the first couple of guys for the Imperial Guard army that i'm starting. I know they aren't completely done and they still need shadow and highlighting finish, but let me hear what you think, C&C welcome

Oh, here and there.

I like everything, but the face. I think you tried to do the eyes, but it didn't work. Just leave it face colored, its better than blotchy.

I do like the purple armor, and the fatigues look great!

Lol, I was about to criticise the eyes too, but I've just realised you've put visors on their helmets, which make the faces look blotchy in the photos. Good stuff, that would have driven me insane

These are a very good start.

First things first, you should water down your paints a bit as the miniatures appear a bit blotchy.

Everyone has covered pretty much everything else though.

Quick tip, for writing #'s on things, first write it on lightly with pencil, and then carefully trace over the pencil with paint. It has worked very well for me, so hopefully it'll work well for you.

Again, great work.

Here's a super nit-pick for you: the guys with bayonets on their lasguns also have a bayonet in their belt scabard. See there are two types of equipment belts in the kit; bayonets in the scabard and empty scabards. The empty scabards are supposed to go with the bayoneted lasguns.

Don't worry pretty much everyone I see overlooks this detail (I told you super nit-pick).

I really dig your colour scheme and awesome job on the visors.

What visors? He has side pictures of the heads. Doesn't look like any visors, just blotches of paint on the eye. Good start though.

If those are your first models they are better than my first models. I would advice you to get a smaller brush for the eyes

If you care about the eyes try this.

Tip... paint the white first then scab red or brown around the white. This will let you form the shape of the eyes. If you mess up dab more white and outline again.. then finish off you flesh tone when you like the eyes

For iris same steps, just paint the eyes what color you want it then outline the iris with white and then follow the setps above

GOOD JOB SO FAR!

I would second the notion of not doing the eyes on rank and file until you've gotten a good grasp of the basics. I usually won't bother with eyes on my models unless they're larger than human-sized (such as Ogryns) or for some reason they have huge peepers.

In addition to all the good hints given by the people upthread, I'll just add one of my own. Q-tips. When something goes wrong, take a generously moistened q-tip and rub it out. Afterwards, dry off the excess water and try again.

The supply does not get to make the demands.

I agree that you should ignore doing eyes for now, as they appear to more of a detriment to the overall model rather than enhancing them.

As for a general comment? Thin your paints when you paint, you can really tell that you have used thick paint on these.

And finally, Leave off the squad numbers on their shoulder pads. Again until your painting improves substantially don't worry about this type of detail work as it often turns out worse than leaving the area blank (as in this case with the eyes and numbers).

A single stripe or 2 stripes on the shoulderpad can just as easily distinguish squads and will look much better.

Focus on going back and retouching everything so that you do not have a certain color spill over into somewhere it should not be, and do something about the faces. A wash could make it look decent pretty simply.

yea your guard look pretty nice. eyes should never be done with a brush unless your a frigging SUPER MASTER painter. get a sharp toothpick, and then shave the end down even more until it looks like a good prison shank. THEN go ahead and try the eyes
