My thoughts are that if you like them, they are perfectly fine to use.
Several hundred years ago, I was a little boy playing second edition. The 40k starter box came with 20 tactical marines, 20 orks, and I believe 40 gretchin. All of the models for each type came in the exact same stiff pose. You also got an ork "dread" that was just a piece of cardboard. We also had to walk through 40 miles of snow just to buy these box sets, not having an "internet" to order them off of.
Anyway, they're not usually the greatest models in the range, but they've come a long way since then I think.

I personally think if you don't need dynamic poses and just need troops. Then it is fine. If you want to be able to magnetize and customize then buy the actual models.
I am using Black Reach Ork Boyz since I need so many. They are all going to have sluggas & Choppas so why not buy them @ $1.00 a model. Especially considering that I can field a maximum of 180 boyz. That would be $396 as opposed to $180.
Same thing with Space Marines. 7 Bolter guys, 1 Flamer, 1 Missile Launcher, & 1 vanilla sgt=$15 on Ebay, $35 regluar pricew/GW
Your stuff looks just as good as the regular models and most people can't distinguish between them.

Hey a good painted model is a good painted model. Some of the FLGS I've been to over the 6yrs I've been into this you'll be lucky to see an army in primer, and yes right now I'm "the pot calling the kettle black".

I like multi part but snap fits are convinient. A multipart and a snap fit are one in the same in gaming terms so no point feeling guilt

You know, in an army like Orks, where you may be fielding 100+ boyz of assorted shapes, it must be very nice that the snap-together minis take some of the brain work out of putting together the army. I plan on buying a box and mixing them in with the old models! PS: Taz, your models are painted very well. Any starter set would be lucky to be painted that nicely.

You should be proud of the paint jobs you have blessed these starter-set models with, not questioning their place in Our great hobby. Starter models are great for encouraging new gamers (or even old gamers that want to start a new army, like me) to get into the army without breaking themselves. You are most welcome amongst our community and I look forward to seeing your future conversions and painting posts; whether it is to advice you on your work or to learn from it!
Thanks!

I'm in agreement with you Taz. I love my AoBR marines and where homogeny gets the better of my paint jobs, I just add some more dynamic models to the unit to break things up a bit.
While I breifly left the hobby and missed out on Mccragge, I too bought the 2nd ed starter set with the goff nobz, autogun gretchin, and 3pc marines. I'm mixing my old 2nd ed marines with the AoBR boys and it's working well. The AoBR orks will be added to my extensive collection of RT and 2nd ed orks for gads of multi-generational fun! No reason not to use these models at the price.

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money
"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

There is absolutely nothing wrong with using starter sets. I myself have over 300 Night Goblins from multiple Skull Pass starter sets. My FLGS Ive been going to for over 4 years had a deal where if you pre ordered the Skull Pass box you got to have a go thru a free box and take what you want. So I took all the Night Goblins and as fate would have it, a friend of mine gave me his Night Goblin sprues from his box which gave me over 300 models. Thanks to that I have saved myself SOOOOOO much money its rediculous, especially since Im in kind of a pinch money wise. Yeah they aren't the best because their all one piece but when you have a Night Goblin horde thats hundreds of models I don't think it should matter to your opponents what they look like haha With all those starter set models I saved myself so much time on modeling as well. All I had to do was put them on bases, sculpt some different features on the trolls and add some different characters and some giants and I'm set with my army. Only thing left to do is paint (which no one hardly ever does at my FLGS which is sad) and play.

i say punch anyone in the face that has a problem with you using starter set armies. screw them, they are perfectly legal and like you said nice and inexpensive. shoot ive seen some massive SM and Ork armies bulked up nicely for APOC just from the AOBR sets. yea i agree they arnt nearly as nice and posable a more expensive box set but who cares.

I like the new 40K starter sets soo much I'm going to buy 3, just to field new Marine and Ork armies.
If I were to ever play fantasy again and wanted a Dwarf or Goblin army I'd use the starter set as mucha s possible. The models look great, are easy to assemble, and rank up perfectly.
I always have fits with Fantasy models lining up properly. I get soo carrried away customising the multipiece models that it takes me forever to finish a regiment.
