New Dex? Best guess is 2010 at the earliest...we wont get them in 09.
Modles - don't need them, some new units yes, but the modles look cool to me.
There is a large what tau should get thread on here if your currious to what people have thought up/wanted.

IMHO, they dont need much, maybe a few new options and model up-dates but other than that theres not much they need, as they are still very useable in 5th

IMO:
- Fire Warriors are a bit (1-2 pts) overpriced,
- the drones don't do enouhg (where are the Gun Drone upgrades)
- more Xenos allies, please
- elite Xenos HtH would be very cool

This is the way I feel about it and please pardon me for being long winded. Its gonna be at least a year and a half to two years and this is what I think would be nice when it gets here. Also, please note that the cost should increase/decrease as necessary to balance the 'dex. Marker lights are over worked, over priced, overly bulky, and overly emphasized. It's like some staffer saw the pavelow system in action and fell in love with it. Then they came up with a bunch of overly complex game mechanics as a way to force us to use them. That was 4th ed. . We don't need the excuses any more because of cover saves. Fire warriors have a bs thats to low. When other other armies are wieghted one way or another they receive bonuses/negatives to balance their stat line. The Tau got mostly negatives. How would I fix these two problems? Make the Tau BS 4 and Marker lights can no longer enhance BS. Also markers can no longer impose leadership penalties but once you spend the counters to lower coversaves the whole army gets to use those counters not just one. Markers still fire seekers. Gun drones need to become a troop choice and gain a flamer option(Makes tank upgrades easier, too.). Only 2 flamer drones per drone squad max and drones are fearless. Heavy weapon drones? Only for squads with drone controller(fluff story that no room for AI in heavier equipped drones)none in drone squads. Sniper drones are no more. Rail drones are Elites with stealth suits guiding up 3 drones each and maybe 6 drones per squad max.(Or just 3 drones per squad for game balance, either or.) Those drone controllers from the sniper drones become pathfinders with networked lights and give them the rail rifle pathfinders as an alternate PF Squad or body guard for the Ethereal. (Was thinking of ethereal=commisar but would make to similar to IG) Drones on devilfish are actually a part of the squad buying the transport and embark and disembark with the unit(They are already counted as passengers and this takes care of KP issue) Drones on Pirahna Squad, only one Pirahna in squadron may upgrade to flamers and drone squad can still disembark at any time that passengers would be able to. Also give the option of shielding in place of disruption pods on Pirahnas to where they are no longer opened topped. Dev Fish make the current gun becomes long barreled variant. Also standardize weapons costs on vehicles. I heard rumor that vespids are getting a rending attack in a couple of years(not reliable) I'd rather they get a poison attack but either would be good. Aun 'Va get to call in airstrikes Shadow Sun gets either stealths as troops "or" impoved tech in her army where stealth suits are spotted on a 2D6x2 roll FarSight army gets across board WS and Initiative increase with access to regular cc weapons and furious charge and preffered enemy when dealing with Orks. Also, (Maybe) Aun'shi finds and joins him some how. The rest I think we'll all agree on. Command node= Company standard.........Positional relay gives reroll to all(even successful) reserves instead of the 2+ single roll with modest price increase........Cyclic Ion Cannon gets true rending even if rate of fire is decreased by 1.......Disruption pods go from 5 pts to 15 or 20pts.....Decoy Launchers work on all ranged glancing hits for same price.....Shield drones how they work is CLEARLY stated. Maybe make them protect the whole squad. First failed save the drone goes away but all the wounds still get invulnerable to that squads fire because its simultaneous. Next squads firing no invulnerable if no drone. I know this seems a lot but there are a lot of errors, out dated terms, force organization oddities, and points irregularities in the codex.

Did you know the Tau don't have a single blast template weapon? Not large blast, the regular blast. Wonder if we'll ever get a weapon for the template or if I need to turn it into a landing pad?

Ha, ya sure we're fine....we also don't have power wepons, and crisis suits are the only thing with access to flamers...and we do have a spead bump unit - it has no save and a 20+ point sargent that gives +1 ld (brings it to a whoping 8) and thats it. (enough of my rant sorry)
Personally going to wait and see hopefully in 2010 we will get a new dex (other armies need it more that us) but until then im probably won't invest much more in them.

I have to admit that I have been one of the nay sayers. For a long time about the situation of the TAU. They will always have problems untill a new codex come out. That will be in a couple years no matter what. We still have some 3rd and 4th addition codex running around in legal area. Tau got BONED in 5th addition and in this forum alone we have had many debates on this subject. I myself have given up playing Tau Empire and play a drop suit army of Commander Farsight. Gun Lines will not work, and tau do not have a real balanced build for GT. i have myself have ended my dakka rants on how the Tau got boned in 5th.
I play my drop armie and dream of the days where we can reform the gun lines and do what tau was designed to do.
To be honest I have built a new eldar army and have become a joiner because I am now painting a Orc horde army. My Tau gunline is now in a box and my drop army is taken to the store but not played much.

I really dont see why the tau codex is so broken, markerlight destroy cover saves, S10 guns, highly survivable tanks, highly mobile troops and alot of hidden extras.

5th addition happened my friend. Cover saves for everyone and faster to assault killed the Tau army. Tau armie was designed to keep the armies at arms reach. now with all the new thing to make sure armies get into hand to hand. Tau die. not much you can do with int 2 str 2

Correction Str 3, Don't give GW any ideas. I do assume you meant WS2.
Markerlights are overworked. They were designed to take down the occassional cover save. Now its all they do. When was the last time that markers firing seekers from fast moving platforms or shaken vehicles was a large part of your game.
My wish list^^up the page is long, but most of the stuff was about revamping drones and markerlights

Not much you can do with smarts when your troops break to a light sneeze. Spending more points on troops removes points from things that can actually kill stuff, not a good trade off.

Jayden and I have gone around on this. Tau need a revamp. pure and simple. Crisis Drop armies work somewhat but can't handle the horde. Tau dosn't have a balanced army build. This disc. is going where all tau threads have gone, people think tau are not messed up and exp. tau players trying to show the light. Tau are fun fluff armies, but on the table they can not cut the mustard. I am waiting for the day of a new codex.
maybe fall 2010
Untill that day I will break them out for my local store games, but to go Rts I will be playing orcs

To work in 5th Tau need either: A) more mobility, or B) more firepower. Either would work though I think the fastest solution would a a major points drop on nearly everything in the list except for disruption pods. If Fire Warriors were 8 points a pop you could fit them and more death dealing crap into your army while still have a somewhat usable gunline, I used to run my tau as 6 units of twelve dudes with three full units of pathfinders to help with the crappy BS. Twas all I needed, now that army pretty much dies a horrible death to anything coloured green with large amounts of red tacked on for extra speed...
