I decided to attempt to model some cenematic effects on one of my rocket marines

basically all they are is foil wadded up into the right shape.
the rest of the model is verrrrry WIP
personally, I am really disliking the smoke discharge from the launcher's tail end.

any thoughts? If so, please share!

No thoughts other than that it looks pretty neat. I like the flame more than the smoke though, and agree that the smoke doesn't look that good. The flame does though.

yeah flame is good work. Why noy try a light orange/brown wash over it to bring out the contours more.

yeah, for the smoke I was thinking of using something like some cotton ball fluff... only problem is I am not sure what i can do to stiffen it up and make it static.

would hairspray work?

The launching missle is spot on, but the smoke in the back would 'mushroom' out, not stay focused like on your model. I think that's why you're noty happy with it. If you make it fan out a bit, it'll be great!

I think the problem with the smoke is that it's backwards--it's too built up near the launcher and needs to be spread out at the end because there's nothing to constrain it and the rocket's done pushing it out. The fire and smoke on the rocket looks great, though.

Attach the rocket to the launcher with a thin metal rod, then build up the smoke around it. Hairspray with tighten up the cotten and shrink it slightly. I like the smoke discharge at the back, maybe with the cotten it will look a little "whispier"........

I'd have to agree, If you flipped it around, it would look a lot better. Good work though!

Here is my two cents;

I would keep the flame right near the actual missle and fade it to black as it got closer to the launcher. The end of the launcher would be the exact opposite, with the flamer being close to the launcher and fading to black. Then lightly highlight the black So;

(ActualMissle)YellowOrangeRedBlackBlack(Actual Launcher) YellowOrangeRedBlackBlack

Not to inject my own picture, but the fade I was talking about is similar to how I did my hellblades;

Hi

Have a look at this picture:

You could have a jet of flame fading to smoke coming from the back?

hmm... These pics of real life missle launchers are interesting.

Still though, just for effect, sometimes its neccesary to be unreal. so I don't think ill put nearly as many flames as in the picture.
this is because it would look "off", especially with the lighting effects on the rest of the model. naturally, most people think of fire coming mostly from the front, and mostly smoke from the back. It would look unrealistic to someone who has seen pictures like this, but to anyone else, they would just assume that is how it should look. I think it would be better for showing the effect.

similar to how newer movies are starting to be filmed in Canada, because suburbs in Canada are more true to what people imagine when they think of "typical American" suburbs, as opposed to what America offers. Its a strange world we live in.

As for the effect idea, I could be wrong.

Try steel wool. I've seen a LOT of fire/smoke bases made from to mark damaged/destroyed tanks.

If you do use cotton. Fluff it how you want, and drip small drips of super glue slowly drip it on the cotton. Wait between drips for the smoke to stop.
