Anybody else notice this in the latest WD? I wonder why they are using the old paints - better colour matching for touch ups on old models perhaps? Cant avoid those dropper bottles though, definitely some non- GW paints being used on the GW flagship models. Perhaps they'll let me bring my vallejos into my local GW when painting now edit: for those who dont have it, this is a recent shot of the eavy metal team and their desk

Spoilsport. Back in the twisty lid citadel paint days, there was a picture floating round of eavy metal using vallejo paints with the labels clearly visible. At least they are a bit more cautious with their photos this time!

hmmm, the dropper bottles have white caps, which makes me think that they're empty bottles filled with some other paint as the VA paints have the grey caps
I have no doubt that the GW team uses other paints than just the GW brand
they would be shooting themselves in the foot if they didn't
- just a note on my procedure
I buy empty dropper bottles and fill them with GW / P3 / Polly paints (order the VA droppers)
and I never have problems matching color formulas or with paints drying out
It's WELL worth the investment, just refill the bottle when it runs out

edit: for those who dont have it, this is a recent shot of the eavy metal team and their desk
i'll list what i know and are confirmed fact from my local GW shop.
-the gw red shirts will always tell you all the heavy metal use GW paint ( they will be fired if they admit otherwise )
-some of the red shirt have amazing paint job for their own armies,
when asked to use in shop GW to paint, they fail pretty miserably.
- Canada golden demon winner Jason Richard luckily used to hang out in a RT and game / paint
in prince george , i used to sit behind him watching him paint hours at a time ( he laughs at GW paint,
but on white dwarf interviews he to say he use GW paint ** despite him using only vallejo )
- All the red shirts that i know for years all tell me off work, GW paint really sucks compared to vallejo
does it work? ya it does. but it requires ALOT more effort to achieve same effects. Guess who was the
ones that told me about the existance of it
well thats all, i dont know how foundation paint compare as i STILL dont have them yet, GW fans can
be adamant about how great GW paint is, thats fine with me honestly.
**edit. looking at the photo, if you ask me i would say its definately vallejo.
I mean if you look at the recent 4 years of white dwarf paint articles with them telling
you how to paint with GW paint, ever notice how god awful they look? there are reasons.

Actually I use the Vallejo Model Color series to paint and they all have white caps.
Now they might just have the val thinner...I use that stuff in every GW color I cant match in Vallejo.

I use some Vajello and some GW. One thing I noticed is that they both have their inconsistancies. Vajello's saddle brown is about as thick as it gets, while their sea greys(medium and dark, not sure about the other ones) are watered down by huge amounts. Their white and yellows are... awkward, to say the least.
Where as GWs metals are all wonderful and perfect and I would never say anything bad about them, their Kommando Khaki has the consistancy of JELLO (no joke, it might even be thicker!) but goes on thinner then anything, and their bleached bone is really watery.
Overall, I like both. GW's Regal Blue and Vajello's Saddle Brown are my two favourite paints in terms of consistancy. I wish both companies would get it like that for all their paints.

To be perfectly honest, i love the GW/Citadel paint range [not so much the price], especially the inks/washes. i have tried other brands such as vajello's and so on but i keep finding myself drawn back to GW.
i have been painting for 8 years [ i havent gotten any better though ^^*, working on it though] and love my GW paints. An im appy tt everye has their own taste, but i love the GW

Hey maybe they don't like returning to their paints to find there all dried to a solid lump, something which vallejo bottles and the old 80/90s era citadel ones don't do.

Hi Guys,
I can probably give you a definitive answer on this, considering that it is my desk you are discussing
The White capped pot on the left hand-side of my desk are OOP Citadel paints in the round and hexagonal pots (Old Goblin Green, Deadly Nightshade, Ghoul Grey etc) I also have some of the old red top Glazes). These are my personal paints which I have left after 20 years of painting. I keep some of them at work so I use them on my own stuff when I paint before and after work and during lunch.
The white topped dropper bottles are just our old GW inks which I have transferred in to eye dropper bottles I bought of the net.
Hope that clears up any conspiracy theories that might be developing

I've got a ton of Vallejo paints, but I also find myself using the GW Tin Bits, and some washes and the like. I've also got a couple bottles of IWMs. Finally, I've got some craft store crap, that's mainly for scenery these days. Honestly, I think that all ranges have their ups and downs. I might end up getting some privateer press P3s in a bit, it's all good.

Surely no-one believes that GW painters use only GW
paint? Come on! Not all of their paint is good.Look at
it this way,if you were working for GW and you knew
that the only way you were going to get a certain
colour was to use another companies paint , you'd do it.
Besides I remember when a chariot for the tomb kings
army first appeared, there was a heavy metal article thattalked
about how he painted it.He said it was Hawk turquoise,
by no stretch of the imagination was it that!party

Very true. VGC Dark Green is completely useless, for example. The VMC "whites" (Ivory and Offwhite) I use have been pretty good for me, very much the average consistency and very dilutable. I'm still testing out their yellow, I haven't yet made up my mind about it.

Hate to burst that Illusion you have there but we do only use GW paints.
If there is a certain colour we want to use but is not in the citadel paint range then we just mix it up from colours that are in the range.
As for the bit you mentioned about the Hawk Turquoise in the painting article, I can't remember the article you mean but I can assure you that it was Hawk turquoise we used on the Tomb King army, sometimes it might appear a different shade (due to photography or printing)
Cheers

As artists, I can imagine that mixing to get a color and consistency that is
not GW paints is pretty much par for the course.
I love it when my coworker busts out the primary colors. Kids freak out that
they'll never figure out how to paint something green or brown.

Like most of us here, I don't attend Eavy Metal workdays so I don't know for sure. But I would guess that the majority of their paints are GW, simply because that's what's available to them. If I could get my paints easily and cheaply in house that's what I'd do, not go out and buy Vallejo. They might even have to pay for that out of pocket. That doesn't mean GW paints are necessarily their personal favorites across the board.
They might use some other brands to supplement occasionally but if you know what you're doing it's not that hard to mix just about any color you need. Sorry to poke holes in the conspiracy theories because I'm usually all for them, it just doesn't add up to me.

I've found that recently, all of the GW paint that I've gone out and bought has all had an excellent consistency, no matter the color. Though with wet palette, it might be a slight bit more convenient to use Valejo, the colors in the Valejo range have always seemed much more dull to me. Perhaps it's just my eyes playing tricks on me.
Perhaps it's a matter of how long the paint has been sitting on the shelf, but recently all my GW Paints have been just perfect. I probably couldn't bring myself to use anything else.

I'm about 80% GW, 20% Vallejo when painting. I'll use GW for moreorless everything except when I need to match discontinued colours, when I need colours that are not in the GW range (saves time from mixing them up - though I do have some premixed bottles of GW paint for commonly used colours like black highlights), and I never use chaos black as I dont like the texture compared to the flat vallejo model color black which I find much smoother and easier to use. When painting flames of war stuff I always use vallejo since they are colour matched to the WW2 paint schemes too. GW washes are unbeatable though.
