I use to play pure noise marine armies with like 30 sonic blasters... in 4th edition CSM.
I just picked up the current edition, and I was looking it through.. WOW.
What hapened (haha - big blasters is so much more expsneisve)
So I'm just thinking and toying around... is a Sonic Weapon based army any good? or any fun anymore?
Is it playable?

It can be fine if you play Lash of Submission on your HQ characters and some Oblits/Vindicators/Defilers in your Heavy Support choices. You can certainly run a bunch of noise marines with sonic weapons in a list like that to good effect though.

Well, sonic blaster spam is still playable, although the Marines with sonic blasters are more expensive by +1 pt.
The blastmaster got a big hit. The weapon is very expensive and cannot be taking in a Havoc squad. ;D

I don't think the blastmaster is worthless now, it just plays a different role than it used to.
Before, you had tank hunting squads of havocs destroying anything that walked in front of them, and now you have 5 guys in cover, on an objective, shooting at troops, or transports, or the occasional lashed/circle jerk.
I still think it has a use, but for a unit in a rhino or one with larger numbers intent on assaulting, I would skip it.
My favorite noise configurations are either
5x Noise Marines
-4x Sonic blasters
-Blast master
Champ with power weapon
-Rhino
or
10x Noise Marines
10x Sonic blasters
Champ
Doom siren, Power Weapon
-Rhino
On either, I'm starting to discover the power of using a combi melta on the rhinos. The noise marines themselves draw a lot of attention with their possible fire power, and don't really have the ability to crack other transports/tanks.
