For some reason, white doesn't seem to cover like most other colors. I am painting a squad of termies white. I spray primed in white and since put 3 coats of white on the model and it still hasn't covered completely and is starting to look chalky. Help? I am using the GW Skull White primer and paint.

Try basecoating with Dheneb Stone (Foundation) and then painting white over it.

I like to prime grey, spray light grey, then finish in white.
Your white paint needs to be thinned to avoid chalkiness.
Also, "white" should generally be an off-white - look at something that you think is white... It's defined by its shadows, not by its highlights. So pure white is only as the brighest highlight.

Do you have access to Vallejo Model Paints? Not the fantasy line or the other one (cant think of what its called). Their white I have just fallen in love with. On a black primer I can get a solid clear white with just two basic coats. Looks good and saves me a ton of time.

I spray a white undercoat/primer then wash with Badab black. Go over the areas I want to stay white with astronomican grey, then white. Then i'll go over the areas to be black or metallic with black ( and then mithril. )

All really great points. Thank you! I am going to try a couple out. I think I can find Vallejo paints and I also like the ideas of washes and white really being off-white with highlights pure white. Thinning the paint is probably why I have been having problems painting white. So all great, thanks.

I found great success painting white, with a bit of "Magic Wash" added in. I'm not totally sure, but I'm sure someone on the forums know more about this then me, but "Magic Wash" is a mix of water and Future Floor Wax. I think the mixture is 50/50. Anyway, It you add a few drops of this to your white on a painting pallete, mix the wash in, you tend to have better coverage with the white paint, no chalky look, and almost no brush strokes. It made painting white of my Menoth Army fun.

Argh!White!
One of the hardest colours I find to work with.
I do it this way.A company called Gamecraft make a
colour called powder blue.It is very light in tint
but it also covers very well.I find that if I get an
even coat of it(this paint does work well)the final
coat of white will look good.It is available from the
two following in the uk.WWW.ralpartha.co.uk (I think)
and WWW.leisuregames.co.uk

I painted a unit of Orks all white. My friend, who had given them to me, said, "What? You didn't even paint them?" He thought I'd copped out even though I really did paint white across the entire model.
But in short, I concur. Straight white just doesn't look that good.
