How far off can you get from a Space Marine chapter paint scheme before it just becomes another chapter all together.

An example, since i can't seem to get my camera working is the howling griffons from the latest WD...the pain scheme has changed from a more basic yellow/red torso and arms and red/yellow legs to switching/alternating the upper and lower arm and the upper and lower leg...

reasons for this question is that i started out wanting to paint Nova marines with is mainly bleach bone/regal blue torso and arms and a regal blue /bleach bone legs along with a complex chapter symbol...well complex if I'm trying to pain the damn thing on... for reasons of my own insanity i really didn't like the bleach bone and switched it with skull white, and it looks fragging nice...the other problem is...well some how i ended up flipping the damn colors completely..mainly to get a white left should to paint on the more easier to paint chapter symbol...so they are regal blue/skull white over skull white/regal blue, all regular troops get yellow helmets, elite...Sgt's, termies, Hq's get red helmets....

So can i still call these guys Nova Marines or have i strayed to far from the template to get that chance? The chapter fluff, what little there is of it says that they are scattered across known space and have not fought as a Chapter since M37... so i was working on 3rd company...

Sounds like you have Nova Marines!

I don't think anyone really cares about varying shades of colors, and I doubt only another Nova Marine would spot your color flip. If all other insignia says Nova Marines, I'd say you're all set!

Hello
I've got my own chapter(still not got a name for it)
that uses the same split colour scheme like yours,
only in Hawk Turquoise/Black.
It was only after I'd finnished painting the troops,I
noticed that I'd painted the vehicles slightly
the wrong way round!Nobody has ever mentioned this, and if
they do I'll just tell them that my chapter units tend
to alternate the colour scheme as a battlefield
recognition device! As long as your paintjob is tidy,I
doubt if anybody will notice.

Yep, you can pretty much interpret the colours how you like. The 'Eavy Metal team certainly do! For example, their guides for painting Ultramarines vary a great deal. Whether they appear in White Dwarf, the GW website or a miniatures painting guide, they all tend to be slightly different. This is because different people use different techniques. It all depends on what works for you.

No pink Dark Angels though. That's just silly.

You're fine with your Nova Marines - minor shift in color is perfectly acceptable.

Repeate after me,
"I can paint my models any way I like."
"I can paint my models any way I like."
"I can paint my models any way I like."

It doesn't matter what color your marines are, they are marines. If you want to paint up a rainbow coloition army that's all kinds of crazy colors and you want to use the blood angles rules for them, feel free. There is no rule that says you have to paint them any specific way. Nothing graits on my nerves more than when people tell others how their stuff has to be painted.

SO was it tough to paint them quartered? Any tricks for the dividing lines?

*sets out to buy some Dark Angels and paint them pink*

That might actually look kind of cool, if the robes were black. Hm....offshooot Slaaneshi Dark Angels?

Anyway, if you're worried about painting your marines a certain way so that they can coincide with fluff, don't be. I don't even think a TFG can complain about that.

Don't quote me on that, though.

Quartered painting wasn't as hard as i thought it would be... Of course technically i cheated since i omitted the hard parts, the helmets, were painted a solid color vs. having to make dozens of painfully straight lines where everyone can see it... the belt is the middle divider, i started light color then dark. for making the color break off between left and right start light and go over the middle line if you want, and then hit the darker color, and make that ramrod straight...but its just like painting any figure, just that i only kinda paint half at a time...
i still have 2 more squads to paint...this process gets old fast...

Awesome, thanks. For now, to get my army painted table-top quality, I am going to do solid color, but thinking about coming back for the quartered look later on. I am trying to do a whole army. Heh.

I would say if the colors look close to Nova Marines and the chapter symbol is Nova Marines, then you have Nova Marines. If you really needed to, you could call your chapter the Novalis Marines and say they are a sub-chapter (x Founding) of the Nova marines.

Very nice looking mini's. How'd you get the white to paint so smooth?

thats like 3-5 coats of skull white, watered down to keep it smooth. it went over a base coat of Spacewolves grey to help the white pop, and that went over black primer...it took forever...I'll post some WIP pics of the figs before i put on the white, when i get a chance...

I don't even want to think about painting something as big as a Rhino...gonna have to get an Air brush...
