How does anyone get their Eldar Grave Tanks like Waveserpents, Falcons and Fire Prism's to sit level when in their flying bases?

I don't want to glue the bases in place but id like to know how anyone gets their tanks to sit level when placed on them.

YO DAKKA DAKKA!

Waveserpents and falcons you can widen the hole to fit in the thicker part of the stand, or a little putty in the hole can do it in some cases.

Fire Prisms? Hell if I know.

I love the Fire Prisim...All plastic body, Metal crystal and gun, the only way I've seen was to either make a base for it, but that took a lot of conversion work, or to just glue it in.

First, ditch the flying stand. They are too prone to snapping at connection points. Go with a metal rod. WHen painted black it will pretty much visually disappear anyway. Next, give the vehicle a "seat" to rest on. A wide, thin washer or plastic disc works well. Affix the disc near the top of the rod (which is glued into the base) but with some rod emerging that can enter the vehicle mounting hole.

Also consider magnets in the vehicle undercarriage instead of the mounting hole/pin setup.

i was gunna say for the fire prism youd prolly just have to use rod. Those things arejust to unbalanced for the regular stand IMO

How about putting a weight in the part of the fuselage that rides high? That's how I always dealt with tripod undercarriage aircraft models. E.g.

I don't know what they use for the clear plastic, but it's very fragile.

It's acetate. Same stuff is used for the canopies and is available in sheets at model shops.

I use 1/4" plexiglass rod for the stands, myself (with the base drilled out to fit it.) and a small stub of 1/8" rodsunk into both the shaft and going into the floor of the vehicle.

Vehicle isn't glued to post at all.

That's savvy, Chromedog. Someone mentioned carbon fiber rods for flight stands in another thread, but I haven't been able to find them. They're flexible, resilient, and strong - although you'd need larger rods for a model like the fire prism.

I'd probably rig it with magnets...

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

before you assemble the hull halves of the falcon/serpent/Fire prizm you need to place a brass tube nice and vertical over the stock mounting location. it has to be both hollow (Duh!) and as large inside as needs to accept the mounting pin. then get the proper size brass or even harder piano wire, and mount also in a very nice and vertical position on the base... you might need to cover the pin type wire with the outer sleeve to set proper height but instead of 5mm of pin you now have a nice straight pin of metal that can be as high as 2 inches...that will keep the bugger on straight...

I cut the top off my flying stands, attached a nice rare earth magnet, put one on the bottom of the tank, and it doesn't move.

I magnetized every jetbike and grav tank I have, and have never looked back. No more snapping flight stands ftw

The plexi rods were cheaper than magnets, is the main reason I did it that way. There is also a 'collar' inside the hull (of the 1/4") drilled to take the 1/8" stub.

It helps to have a plastics/plexi manufacturer across the road from where I lived at the time.

They even did tinted plexi rods, down to 1mm (red/blue/green/purple and orange).

For me magnets ended being cheaper for me just because I was buying a set of a 100 for my jetbikes (for10 dollars) and with it comes a "sample pack" containing many large magnets, which just happened to fit for grav tanks.

It also made my storage and transport easier, as the sabol trays don't a taller vehicle, unless you make the plexi rod removable, of course.

Yeah, none of the stands are fixed to the vehicles. Even my jet bikers come off their bases for transport.

They just 'plug' into the lower hull. Bases and vehicles fit into same case.

There aren't any magnet suppliers in my area, and shipping is a killer, as RE magnets can't be posted under our laws. What might be a $3 postage cost can be as high as $15 for courier delivery

I have about 20 Falcon hulls. They are Falcons, Fire Prisms, Wave Serpents and a Night Spinner. I use a 1/4" dowel drilled and glued into the flying stand's base, then drill a 1/4" hole in the hull-bottom and an 1/8" hole in the dowel. In these holes, I glue a 1/8" magnet and a 1/4" magnet.

Transports easily, never falls or leans over, never, EVER snaps off.

What I did for my Tau tanks was to drill through the floor and cement in a hollow plastic tube. Then I cut lengths of wire coat hanger and used them in place of the plastic rod on the flight stand.

You have to do some malarkey on the bottom end to make them attach to the stand. The wire pokes up inside the tube and hits the roof of the model. This makes it much less top heavy, since the model is sort of hung from above.

See my Deff Kopta challenge entry for an illustration of hos this works.

yeah,
some good ideas in here.

I just use the standard flying base.
I make the hole in the tank a bigger, so the main shaft of the rod just fits and a bit of Blue Tac to wedges it in.

(dunno what blue tac is called in america... mostly it's used to hang posters on walls, it's a reusable fixing putty...)

PAnic...
