Spoiler:
So in galaxy in flames (or false gods I get the two mixed up title wise) Garviel Loken was stuck under a bunch of rubble before Horus began his final bombardment and suffered the written version of a cut to black

But I have always though that he never died ( it's never said he died just that he was burried under rubble before the bombardment) so to my point could he have survived and is GW just waiting to throw him back into the heresy at a later date? I personaly would be all for it as I really liked him so what do you all think?

Doesn't matter what it is or what it is intended to do. If you add a chainsaw to it then it is instantly better!

half of me hopes he isnt dead, 'cos I like him as a character, but half of me hopes he is because bringing him back to do something significant in a later novel (i.e lowering the shields to horus's battlebarge [or something]) is just the kind of predicatable goodie vs baddie hollywood cheese I frown upon in novels.

The black carapace covering his chest is split open by Abaddon during their duel before he is thrown into a wall and crushed by rubble.
He's still semi exposed when the planet is torched by setting fire to the gasses produced by the life eater virus.
Even assuming he survived all that, he's in need of urgent medical care and there isn't any; there is no way off the planet as everything not part of Horus' fleet has been destroyed or fled the area and nothing mechanical would have survived the orbital bombardment (we are talking Exterminatus here).
They simply mustn't bring him back as it would be so horribly cheesy because part of the shock of the heresy is that so many strong and brilliant personalities were killed by the traitors and the Emperor's work not only not completed, but undone.

On another note, an idea which doesn't seem to have been covered yet is that of human worlds which the Crusades never reached and so have continued these last 10,000 years as though the imperium didn't exist; it leaves a lot of scope to develop.
There could be a human version of the Tau Empire out there someplace who've decided that the dark age of technology is no reason to give up true science and who are slowly coming up to the technology that humans had at their height so anything's possible; Loken coming back hopefully is not one of them.

I can imagine a way, he can come back.

I always thought he was dead, know im not sure.

The tau could save Loken, introduce him to the greater good. He could come back as a tau space marines.

I think it's pretty much taken that Loken copped it under the rubble. The real question is did Saul Tarvitz die?

edit: by the way, the spoiler warning is thoughtful but the thread title kind of gives it away

Dramatically, Loken doesn't have much to do. It would cheapen the high price of Horus' betrayal if we didn't lose a good character. It's like Romeo surviving to date other girls.

Tarvitz got beheaded by amixand (little horus). It would interesting to find out what happened to Little Horus?

Maybe he lowered the sheilds to Horus's battle barge.

It said he questioned what he did, and felt guilty, so a possiblity.

@ Xav....are you actually reading this thread? Every response seems to be at a slight tangent!

On topic:

I tend to agree with the general feeling that Loken is better off being left for dead. It does add to the gravity of the situation, and it also (in my opinion) shows the quality of a good book, if the writer can help you to sympathise with the main character so much so that you feel a sense of "loss" at the characters passing.

If only more BL books could achieve the same sense of moment.....

Again no. Saul tarvitz, of the emperor's children. aka lucius' best mate turned arch enemy.

And I agree with the general consensus that big personalities had to die to show the weight of the situation.
