I always thought the accent was on the first syllable, but a friend of mine feels that it should be placed on the middle one. This doesn't seem right to me, but what do you all think?

Personally, I prefer a pronunciation with a more Germanic origin, in that the accent is on the first syllable.

If you prefer a pronunciation with a more Latin origin, you could place the accent on the penultimate syllable, which is the second syllable in this case.

'ah-BAY-d'un'

'abba-DON'

'uh BAD uhn'?

isnt there a demon in christian mythology called Abaddon too, & thats what hes named for? if anyone knows how to read IPC theres probably a pronunciation of the demon's name on wikipedia which will in turn give you The Despoiler's pronunciation.

Actually, if you prefer a pronunciation with a more Latin origin, you'd say Exterminans.

The actual pronunciation is אבדון. Of course, it you can't read Hebrew, that doesn't really help.

I can't read Hebrew, either, and I've never studied the linguistics of Semetic languages. So, I don't know the accent patterns present in the language.

Here's everything you might need to know about it; everyone can research the pronunciation themselves and make their own determination:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abaddon

http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=Abaddon

http://www.monstropedia.org/index.php?title=Abbadon

http://www.yourdictionary.com/abaddon

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/Abaddon

(The dictionary sites' recorded pronunciations both place the stress on the second syllable, while reducing the first to schwa and totally destressing the vowel in the final syllable.)

They have over them as king the angel of the abyss. His name in Hebrew is "Abaddon," but in Greek, he has the name "Apollyon."

So, yep. Biblical, and Hebrew.

(Also, he has army of super grasshoppers.)

Anuvver fing - when they do sumfing, they try to make it look like somfink else to confuse everybody. When one of them wants to lord it over the uvvers, 'e says "I'm very speshul so'z you gotta worship me", or "I know summink wot you lot don't know, so yer better lissen good". Da funny fing is, arf of 'em believe it and da over arf don't, so 'e 'as to hit 'em all anyway or run fer it.

Abaddon originates from an old Mycenaean religion that was later adopted in the area extending down the Nile to where Eritrea now is, where it seeped into the Hebrew belief from Egyptian influences across the Sinai.

In it's original language it's pronounced Abayo-hanzo-sdeel.

I don't understand why this is even a contested issue? It's not like it's some made up word or unorthodox, odd grouping of letters (Tzeentch, Ghazghkull).

a-BAD-en

Plain and simple. It's not AB-a-don, Abba Dawn, a-BAY-den, or anything else other than above.

This is 2nd-3rd grade basic english, people. How do you pronounce other double-consonant words?
How do you pronounce 'gladden'? GLADE-en? GL-aden? No. You pronounce it 'gl-ADD-en'.
