I've been tagging and voting and such like a madman on the gallery but it seems the vast majority of images have zero votes and zero views. Now granted there's a lot of crap in there but it just seems no one is looking at all.

For example the highest rated this week
http://www.dakkadakka.com/core/gallery-search.jsp?sort1=5&st=7
is 28 pages with ZERO votes.

For all the functions, it seems people just use it as a dumping ground for images.

Which is fine but seems a waste.

Agreed. Many of my figs have 60+ views and no votes. I have 1 fig with 2 votes and I still don't know what they are because there aren't enough votes.

The highest rated Tau image is a space marine dread. I'm assuming the "tau" tag was added because of a conversion bit. I've seen very few images with more than 2-3 votes. It seems the pics are at either end of the scale of numbers of votes.

I voted on about a score of images, but it doesn't seem to do much given the sheer amount of photos in the gallery.

I have a few Flames of War images posted, and it looks like some people voted on them (I didn't even know until now), so I'm kind of happy that I got some votes.

I guess I should try to keep up with the times a little bit better, I'll try to upload some more stuff and cast a few votes.

Of course if people wanted to add some comments to my images too, that would be cool....

I see stuff I've uploaded to my article page in there, most of which is household items that could be used to scratchbuild. Maybe there should be a 'go into gallery option?' when uploading images to an article.

I do look there myself, vote on some things too.

Maybe we should make it a habit of voting in the gallery whenever we
attach images of any kind to a post (even ones that won't show up in
the gallery).

This, of course, would be more of a social convention than anything else.

The gallery was a massive project, and currently has 14000 images that have only been viewable for 45 days so far, so it is going to take a while before there are enough votes.

So far there have been 11000 votes across the gallery. Each image needs 5 votes before the votes are displayed, as it uses the middle 3/5ths of the votes to calculate the average.

There is a new release going out this weekend which has a load of updates to the gallery, including a vastly improved voting interface. This will allow people to get properly random images instead of seeing image after image from the same series of photos which makes it a bit less fun at the moment.

There will also be a DCM-only (for now due to load concerns) turbovoting interface, which will be a popup with a smaller version of the image (320 pixels wide), and will allow keyboard pressing for voting, so you can just press 7 8 to give a vote for paintjob 7 and coolness 8. Then the next image will load. It has been designed as a work distraction, so you can have a small window open (with a clever, work-safe title), then whenever you are bored at work you can have a quick browse of the mini gallery and help us out with voting.

I've redesigned the randomisation algorithm temporarily to optimise images with no votes, so that images without votes get voted on first. As time goes on it will get more and more entertaining to do the voting, but it is a bit of a slog right now.

Starting from mid day Saturday it should be a bit more fun, and then once every image has votes it will become a lot more entertaining to vote in the future.

I think that getting your own pics voted ON should be an opt-in system. That way you can have WIP and other pics vaguely related to wargaming still in the image dump, but without cluttering the voting section.

Some way to make the gallery seem more like a CMON's gallery where only one picture of every finished model can be seen. It'd force people to amalgate their completed models into one pic but it would also mean that you don't have 5-6 pics of the same model that all need to be voted on.

This wont be a problem as the gallery gets more votes. The WIP and vague images will automatically be pushed out of view except for the very occasional random chance. Most of the cool gallery navigation stuff has to wait until we get enough votes in first though, but with the turbovoter for DCMs (and mods), you can do about 30 votes per minute, so 5 dedicated mods or dcms can make a massive dent on it over a month.

One more stat for you that shows how we need to push voting a bit more than we already do.... There have been almost 205,000 image views in the gallery since it launched in early December. If people arent commenting or voting, they are still looking and the totals will only increase faster as we continue to tweak the gallery over the coming months.

I think we need bigger links to the Articles and Gallery sections so that they're more prominent.

You can delete images from the gallery if you feel they serve no purpose. Anything vaguely related to wargaming was left in as a precaution so that people could use them and vote on them just in case. To delete an image, go to the image page, click on the edit link under the image, then click on delete.

What bothers me about the Gallery is, that I have to tag every picture seperatly and I usually post 4 or 5 pictures of the same modell.

How about a 'Remember, YOUR votes count' banner on the gallery page, try to remind others about the voting side of things ?

I like the gallery, and I think it works very well considering it's a relatively new feature, but I'm getting fed up of seeing really good work with loads of views but no votes. It's an insult to all of those who have put so much time and effort into their work. ( and YES, I vote on every image I look at, it's the easiest way of giving contributors feedback )

Also fixed in this weekend's release. You will be able to tag your own galleries with the same tag for every picture. It will also be a hundred times easier to sort images into your own galleries, and rename your own galleries too.

I'm hoping by March we should be all good with this. 1 in 20 image viewers vote which is pretty decent, but I'm sure we can crank that total up a lot with the new release and a concentrated effort from the mod team and any DCMs who want to help out. The first thing we had to do was get the gallery working and check all 14500 images, but now that is done we can start focusing on getting things to work better. The voting should start to pick up and we'll be adding things like the banner you mentioned as time goes on, so that we can get a specific measure on how effective each tweak is, one release at a time.

Somewhere in south-central England.

I don't look at the gallery often and I don't usually vote when I do.

The reasons are;

1. My main reason for looking in the Gallery would be to find pics of stuff I am interested in (not random browsing, in other words) and I am not used to the tagging and choosing systems.

2. I would only place votes in a narrow range. If I see a picture that is really dreadful, I would not give it a low score as that would discourage the owner. So on the rare occasions I vote, I tend only to vote in the range 5-9.

It will definitely help random browsing to not have images grouped together, so I am looking forwards to that feature.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Yeah, ratings systems are difficult to figure out. Do you really need 6 levels of "not-so-great"?

It's one thing I struggle with at work.

Thanks Legoburner!

I think 2 recommendations stand out here, the first is some way to tag an image as 'non-voteable' 'no random browsing'.

I've uploaded quite a few pictures from White Dwarf and now the Chaos books for review, they really should not be in the same queue as painted models. Ditto the 30 pictures of your paint box

The second is a better connection to the gallery. If images in the forums could be clicked to take us to the gallery page more people would use it.

Generally, same here.

I dedicated myself to a lot of voting in the first couple weeks, but I haven't been doing it so much lately. The turbovoting sounds like exactly what I need.

Kyoto makes a good point, I've been hitting things like piles of his WD uploads, and that has been discouraging when I'm on a voting mission.
