I was looking through it earlier and I think there is a giant infestation of sad kids...
Models that where awesome looking and very well painted where voted very low :(
Also, I find it annoying that it asks me to give the photo tags, that should be the job for the person uploading it...

I think anyone who has over a hundred posts gets asked to contribute to taggage... Lego would know for sure though. Perhaps it could be higher, or perhaps that particular contribution could be toggled (and I see now that it already can). I certainly hope it isn't involved in turbo-voting. I don't mind doing it, unless I'm sifting through a pile of Kyoto's WD scans again. I've gone through my gallery, and confirmed that I have received approximately TWO votes. On the same image. I know one of them is mine, because I voted on myself just to see if I could. Kind of depressing. Linky anyone? I think I'll put it in my sig...

You can disable that 'tagging' pop-up in your user profile (this pop-up appears for any 'trusted' user who has 100+ posts). But please remember that a huge percentage of the original images were uploaded directly from forum posts (and some still are) in which case the user didn't get a chance to even tag their images in the first place.
Also, as it stands now (but will be fixed this weekend) it is a little bit of a pain for a user to tag each of their images, so even people who were aware that they have images that need to be tagged may not have done so just because it wasn't easy to do.
As for the voting/quality of images. . .things will be changing soon as Lego said.
One thing we had upon the initial release was a bug that prevented logged-out users from seeing new random images. They would end up getting the same images over and over again unless they manually searched for a new image.
This problem will be fixed probably by the end of January and once that happens we should see a LOT more votes from guests to the site. This combined with the tool that Lego mentioned that will allow DCMs to vote on dozens of images quickly will get many, many more votes into the gallery.
And the gallery randomization will really, really start to shine once the majority of the images have received the 5+ votes it takes for them to be considered not 'new' anymore.
So rest assured that the issues with the gallery are known by Lego and I and he is hard at work making fixes for them all.

To make adding tags easier, if I'm going to get a dialog box chucked in my face it would be nice to have an array of common checkboxes (army titles, game types, terms like Work In Progress or Conversion) or dropboxes (again, one for army, one for game type, etc.) so I don't have to type so much. Obviously the same field for custom tags and things like character names would still be required. Generally I think it would help to unify the tags that are used as well.

A lot of that tag unification is done behind the scenes. Basically, I can take any tag that someone enters and marry it to an existing tag. So right now if you enter the tag:
' 40k'
it will then actually appear as the tag 'warhammer 40,000' because I have told the system to do exactly that. The same is true if you type 'warhammer 40k' or ' wh40k' for example. If someone tags a different version or spelling of this tag at a later date I can simply direct that tag to the master 'warhammer 40,000' tag and all the searches for their spelling of the tag will direct users to the main 'warhammer 40,000' tag and conversely and searches for 'warhammer 40,000' will include their improperly spelled tag as well.
While I agree that it would be nice to be able to have a drop down menu with common tags that's kind of a whole different bowl of wax when it comes to programming, as right now the dialogue box contains just a simple entry field. Adding checkboxes, drop down menus, etc. would take a lot more work to implement.
Lego did mention that soon you will be able to apply tags across all images in a gallery, which should make tagging images a lot easier.
I think ultimately when the randomization is working the way it should be (which is soon) it will be much less frustrating to tag things because you'll truly be seeing different images each time rather than slight variations from the same gallery over and over and over again.

As for completely cutting images out of random browsing, this is on the cards but I'm not going to implement it just yet. The release this weekend will hopefully lead to a massive surge in voting, and once the majority of images (including the crappy ones) get 5 votes then the crappy/barely related images should be pushed out of most random viewing automatically. The release after this one will make voting more fun (this release is about getting the votes tolerable and optimised, the release after that is about making the voting highly enjoyable). The intention is to monitor the lower quality images as time goes on and see how much of an issue they are a few months down the line. If they are still a problem then I'll add the code to optionally cut them out, but due to the level of integration and effort that requires, I am keen to try and tweak other areas around it first.

Thanks Yak and Lego for all the hard work setting the gallery up AND improving it. On the issue of people seeing things they don't need to, maybe if the gallery automatically left out things tagged 'work in progress', 'artwork', 'battle report' and 'hobby tips' but users could enable them in their random searches. Then people will stop whining about my retro reviews

That is one thing I had considered, but due to the percentage of images without tags, I thought it might be better to just cut out anything with more than 5 votes and an average rating (paintjob + coolness / 2) of less than 3 from random browsing. I've done that for guest users but it wont take effect until there are a 5+ votes for a majority of images.

I don't mind seeing WIPs, but I always tag them as such if they haven't been already. Just N/A for painting. That's why it's there, right?
Really dark photos (like someone's "Chaos Orks") are more difficult to vote on. They're just silohuettes.

Unfortunately, I haven't been to witness the awesomeness of the dakka gallery. This is because the uber suckage of windows. I have some parental controls on my profile, but nothing really limiting, only for really baaad no no's. So every site I want to look at pretty well works.
Except the gallery. So, even with proxies, I still can't zoom or anything. Worse, changing the settings doesn't help either, as the images are "unrated" so they are deemed unworthy. Trust me, using a proxy for every thread with pics gets annoying.
Anyway, end personal problem.
as far I have seen, gallery = rad

What proxy software is it? I'll look into a way around it if there is one.

The parental controls are built into windows, so its not too hard to understand why it acts so strange.
I've tried to make an exception, but it only goes by individual photos for some reason. So I have like 2 pics that work. :S
oh well. no need to rewrite the system for me. I will find a way to sort it out eventually.
I usually just look around on my friend's computer anyway, or when I am at school.
But when you're doing that, there's probably more interesting stuff to look at.

You can delete images from the gallery if you feel they serve no purpose. Anything vaguely related to wargaming was left in as a precaution so that people could use them and vote on them just in case. To delete an image, go to the image page, click on the edit link under the image, then click on delete.
Rightio. Was worried that deletion from the gallery was deleted from site, but if it isn't I have some housework to do. Excuse me...

Someone mentioned having the 'Not displayed in Gallery option' for when you upload and while I second that notion, I would also suggest an option to remove already posted images from gallery view (I apologize if this is currently an option and I missed it).
For example, in our battle report we took various pictures of our army and I snapped one of my Custodes. I also recently took a picture of my Custodes updated with a banner. So, now I have two Custodes images (Same models) in the gallery for viewing...and I really don't want the second to show in results as it unfairly clutters the rankings. Yet, I don't want to delete it as it would adversely effect the battle report article.

Images are copied into the gallery, so you can simply delete them from the 'edit this image' link under the image on the specific image pag in the gallery to remove it from the gallery only. As the gallery only uses copies of images, it will not delete them from the rest of the site (unless of course you uploaded it to the gallery for hosting and are using a link to the gallery image in other places, but if you did that you would know!)

Yakface, could you maybe add a counter to how many times a person votes on the gallery? That might be an incentive for people to go out and vote, if they can see that there's a numerical value associated with each one, just like posting does.

That could be cool, although I think the only place for it that others could see (which I think is the point you're getting at) would be next to your user name in comments you leave.
Good suggestion!
