i was curious, why do i see so many people call a turret, like on a tank, a turrent?
i was wondering if it was a language thing or just a common mistake.
any ideas?

YO DAKKA DAKKA!

I'm pretty sure it's just one of the more common phonetic mistakes.

For the same reason people say "be more pacific" or "the Artic circle". Idiots, basically.

A lot of misspellings are due to homophones (words that sound alike such as where/were/wear),
and words that simply look alike aside from the inclusion or exclusion of single letters
(adverse/averse, affect/effect) or the shifting of two letters (rogue/rouge).

I might just have to collate some of the more common ones for kicks.

The problem you describe I'm guessing did not become an issue until people started seeing
the word torrent in 5th edition. So they've seen a word, they know how it sounds, and when
they think of a word with similar letters, they default to the one they know how to spell.

(I haven't seen the torrent/turret or the turrent bastardization you mention. Maybe I
should read tactics and army lists more).

People do the exact same thing when there are silent letters or odd placed letters in
their pronunciation. So instead of library, you hear liberry.

tl;dr : English is effed up.

i agree with you there Mal. I feel bad for my son who is just starting school. I dread having to explain the whole point behind silent letters and why 2 different letters make the same sounds...
do a quick search on turrent and you'll see a few examples

You could always try French. I speak un petit Francais, and used to help teach it.

Asked the Teacher whats with the Masculine and Feminine etc, and there is no rule whatsoever. At all. Things are either one or the other with no rhyme or reason. Explain THAT to dyslexic kids!

I belive "a little" is "un peu". "Petit" is a descriptive adjective, "peu" is an amount.

A lot of misspellings are due to homophones

Sure blame it all on the homo....ohhhhh.....never mind.

Just goes to illustrate my point. I really don't know much French. And they let me pass on knowledge to the next generation! HA!

I never really believed that it was that big of a problem, until I pulled a quick search on the misspelling.

Wow. That's...kind of sad.

I wonder where this even came from?

That's what teachers are for.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

It's worse in German. They also have neutral words. One of them is the word for girl.
