Great to see the ferries rallying round.

Thank goodness it happened in daylight. It would have been a different story at night.

Geese are mean. No matter how gakked up the internet gets, there will never be a lolgeese site.

A couple days ago in a US style socialist guy (see the Car Czar thread to know what I mean) blog, the owner was ranting about how much did the pilots paid for basically driving a bus, about how safety procedures where in place to do nothing and so on.

I guess that he´ll shut up now after watching an example of why good pilots are paid top buck.

I´m not scoring any political point but decrying an attitude that at least in Spain (and in some other places I have lived in) it´s very common among some self described socialist people that can´t understand the different scale of pay for a highly qualified professional that 99% of his work time only supervises the plane.

That was exactly my thought as well.

99,999 out of 100,000 the flight is totally routine and the accountants are left wondering why they pay someone £100,000 a year to just avoid switching off the autopilot.

On the 100,000th flight, the pilot suddenly has 30 seconds to save a 200 ton plane full of people and jet fuel from ploughing into a hospital and a primary school in a densely populated suburb.

Indeed. My friend said that she could see the whole scene from her work. She said the ferries were there in minutes (which is fortunate since the plane apparently started to sink shortly after coming to a stop). Actually, it's quite fortuitous that the plane "stopped" where it did since there are LOTS of active piers around that area.

Kudos to the pilot for landing that plane in one piece. There's some talk about not "over-dramatizing" the situation and, while commendable, not to "over-glorify" the pilot, but he's made a good example of the capability of (some) airline pilots. I would've probably pissed my pants if I were in his position.
