You have to start with a good white undercoat. Then you would highlight either with a lighter yellow or with a bit of white added in, and I personally shade with a yellow-orange and some brown in the deep cracks. Simply mixing dark colours, like black, into the yellow just makes it look dirty, and you loose the richness and lustre of the yellow.

The easiest way I've found to paint yellow is to paint orange first, the drybrush white. How heavily you drybrush depends on how light or dark yellow you want; Heavier drybrush for a lighter yellow, or a lighter drybrush for a darker yellow. After the drybrush I wash with yellow ink (GW has discontinued their inks, but I hear their new washes are good, I haven't tried them). This method is quick and easy, once you get the hang of it. I like it so much I haven't actually dipped my brush in yellow paint since I discovered how to do it.

-Note: You may get a slight sheen from the ink (don't know about the new washes), a quick coat of matte spray takes care of this.

It demonstrates an effort made to be understood, and to make your post an easy and pleasant read. By making this effort, you can often elicit more positive responses from the community, and instantly mark yourself as someone worth talking to.

I've found the basic GW yellow is really bad at covering.

It too about 5 coats for me to cover the wings of my Deff Kopta Challenge model, and that was starting from a medium grey primer coat.

The coating problem can be solved by changing the coats you use.

For the first coat, make it 50% white and 50% yellow. For the second coat, make it just yellow. This will save you a lot of time, and allow you to use yellow even over a black undercoat. By the way, this is great for any bright color that has a rough time coating (Reds tend to be troublesome).

Alternatively, you can paint the area in white first. Shade and highlight as if you were painting it white, then throw a glaze over the whole thing in yellow. I usually go over the tops of the highlights in white afterwords, and it comes out very strong and bright.

I paint with some medium brown. Cobra Leather. Then it's usually
two coats of VMC Flat yellow over that. I'm not good at getting that
clean yellow people get for their Imperial Fists, though.

My Tyranids have a yellow/Black colour scheme, so I sort of Had to find a good technique to paint yellow. I start with a coat of Scorched Brown (Over a coat of Black Spray), Then a layer of Snakebite leather, followed by a Layer of Bronzed Flesh. I then paint a on my yellows (In my case, Sunburst yellow w. highlights). I find that this creates a very bright yellow.

Yellow is a real pain!
As some other Dakkas have suggested, you need a good basecoat.
Any light brown will work(real light brown, stay away from the
red end of the spectrum )Make sure that the basecoat is
even, after that a few layers of yellow should work.
I use a basecoat of Gamecraft Sand, which is a really good
base for a host of colours. Two coats of that an I can get away
with 1 coat of yellow.

The link above takes you to pics of my Bad Moons, who a few people like the yellow of. It is a very dark yellow, which you may not like. Halfway down I explain how I did it.

Paint a layer of Tenticle Pink and then go over it with badmoon yellow. This works over a black base coat.

Buy an oil paint - they go on perfectly first time - a bit thick but ok if you are careful. You'll need a paint thinner to clean the brush, and you'll want to use a separate brush for it.
(I would use an oil paint white - then once it's dry, repaint white with normal GW paint, then from that point paint as normal).
