I checked the articles section and also did a search, but did not find the info I needed.

I'm looking to magnetize my bike/ land speeder weapons by putting magnets under the seats and in the torsos. I've drilled appropriate holes to fit the magnets into each section.

1) Is the best "fit" to have a magnet in each piece or should I use a magnet in 1 section and a washer, or other metal object, in the other section?

2) What is the optimal way to keep the magnets in place? Crazy glue alone hasn't done the job for me. My next thought is glue followed by green stuff, followed by magnet, followed by more glue and green stuff.

Thanks in advance for the help.

The best way is to have a magnet that looks like a washer and a steel pin. Put the pin in the leg portion of the model and the ring in the body. These need to be snug then ca and zip kicker to hold them. The pin works as a pivot and won't slide around while you turn the body.

For me what has worked is drilling the hole just a little bit bigger and using green stuff to make a casing around the magnet. Then using CA glue with some accelerant to hold it all on.

I've also used a layer of thin plasticard between the magnets. if it will be an arm or something that will have a chance to rotate out of position I agree with Sonofruss and insert a pin as well. It should look like this:

o = magnet . = pin; together = o.

This is the type of magnet I was talking about two down from the top. Then you get a steel pin the size of the hole. Instant pivot that holds the body and turns.

I've not done any thing big yet, just a few on my SM. But so far I've had the best luck with magnet to magnet. I've found any magnet under 3/4", just dose not have the sticking power I like. When it's magnet to metal. As for keeping them in place. I just use Zap-A-Gap, a little in the hole where the magnet is going, then a thin layer over the magnet, its worked so far.

Thanks for the replies so far.

I think my biggest problem has been testing the magnets too soon.

Besides the bikes and speeders, I've started on my Pred sponsons. I won't be doing anything on Infantry models, but I definitely want to have as many options for my vehicles.

Another stupid question. Does paint stick to magnets or will I need to cover them with GS?

For cheap magnets, this is th ebest place I have found.

My friends have gotten 1,000 magnets for less than 10 bucks on this site!

Good luck with it, it makes the game a lot more fun and your armies easier to transport and customizable when you magnatize stuff.

Your paints will rub off in time especially if there is a lot of movement.

Ya it'll rub off. To keep my paint safe, I do one thin coat of flat clean, then a thick coast of flat clear at the join where the magnet is, and just in case I'll brush on gloss clear. That's worked so far.
