I want to start a kroot army because I love kroot but, sadly the kroot merc list isn't tournament legal and i'ma regualar tournament goer. Also i'm not too fond of that list anyway. Now I thought that I could just do a tau army with mostly kroot but it would suck so bad and not allow many conversions. Then I thought i could do a kroot ork army (not nob bikers or loota spam) and then I had the idea of a daemon kroot army which I think would be cool.

Pros of a tau army
I don't have to proxy or explain complicated counts as
I can use kroot as kroot

Cons
Not many conversion ideas comparitivly
It would suck
I would have to field some tau

Pros of an ork army
I can see a kroot counts as army counts as orks
more conversions
more models so the army would look better when finished
Krootox nobz come on!

Cons
could be considered cheesy because it's orks

Pros of a Daemon army
Lots of conversions
Fun to play it's daemons they deep strike it's random and random is fun
Forgeworld knarloc soulgrinders
Krootox blood crushers

Cons
Not many models so not as cool to look at
I can't think of what HQ's and troops I culd use kroot to represent?

So what should I start?

From a tourney standpoint, absolutely orks...

Pro's for orks. 'free' kroot going to war off of a warsphere would have far less access to vehicles, they'd have the man-power (or bird-power if you prefer). Most ork lists don't run vehicles, so you can get a nice horde kroot thing going. Most orks have the same statline too, so you can get away with having a bunch of kroot models on the table and avoid confusion.

Orks and kroot have a similar stat profile too. high armor save, 2 attacks base, high weapon skill, swap strength and toughness...

I think from a fluff perspective kroot would fight an awful lot like orks.

pro's for demons. knarloc rider bloodcrushers, great knarloc soulgrinders... wow that would rule!

Con's for orks. Some lists would require serious conversions/explanations. Lootas need to be 15 well armed models on 25mm bases. I bet you are up for the challenge but it would be tricky.

EDIT: another option just came to me.. It's counts as... do both! Get the knarlocs for demons, and make the lootas when you feel like playing orks!

For kustom force fields for kroot, watch the climax of the phantom menace. I always felt like that war scene was tau fighting against kroot. And kroot had the KFF there.

Con's for demons. Well, one of them is the different profile for all of the troop demons. If you have some horrors, some bloodletters and some plaguebearers, you'll need to do a decent job converting some differences to make it clear.

the other con is the fluff explanation of why they are all deep striking. I bet a little cleverness can get you to something like... they are all buried underground in pits covered with leaves, and they are popping out of their hiding spots. I'd gladly buy that if your models looked cool and were clear and easy to remember.

Either way you go, you'll have a competitive army. If you do it right, you'll get more soft scores, I was a stubborn mule when it came to counts as... I envisioned lazy or cheap people using the rule as a shield to not spend money and to play armies that they want to play, at the expense of their opponent. Since its existence, it has been remarkably NOT that. The people who have used counts as tend to put a lot of love and conversion time into their armies, and invent great backstories for them. It also protects people from being dead in the water with their armies based on where their codex is in the development cycle, or in the case of the kroot, left high and dry when a white dwarf army list didn't make the edition change.

what about a kroot detachment that was supposed to join a tau force to help pacify a world that was in the grip of civil war, but their ship got lost in the warp (or something *remembers Tau dont have warp tech*), & they all got possessed by daemons.

then you can have a counts as daemon army, with lots of cool conversions, but its still kroot.

Orks all the way.

Yeah, the stats are goofed with S3 T4 instead of S4 T3, but you can do a lot more with the models.

Tau are a bit too "techy" unless you're pushing for some *amazing* conversions...

I want to have a VERY nice looking army something that could win players choice or best appearance at a GT and since my painting skills are only above average IMNSHO I would need to model something beautiful. Orks could work but, the forgeworld possibilitiies are keeping daemons in the running.
