A small town at the foothills of the beautiful Cascade Mountains

I want to mottle my Eldar (Alaitoc) tanks. How is this done? I am guessing you start with black, then dry-brush on regal blue, then ultramarine blue to finish. How wet do you want the paint (like drybrushing, or overbrushing)? What paintbrush should I use - a GW tank brush? Any other tips?

I looked but couldn't find any howtos on mottling....

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

Mez

You might think about using a sponge and sponging the colors on

Well I use a very stiff brush. Dip a corner of the bristles in the paint. With a short tapping motion on a paper towel to get paint on the front of the bristles. Then tap on the model to distribute paint there to your liking. I use different shades for this and it works well for me. If you want I could post a pic of my nurgle land raider to show you.

I thought you mispelled "modeling" at first, and popped in to disparage you for your poor English skills. Imagine my embarrasment!

The sponge method I think works best, though stipling has also served me a bit.
Another thing you could try for a less pitted look is to add too much soap to some wash, and apply with that. It will tend to spread out more. Alternately, if you want spots of different color reminiscent of a blood splatter or really thick mud, dipping a toothbrush in paint and then running your thumb over the bristles to flick paint bits at the model works too.

when i read that i thought bounty? a coconut chocolate bar? how is that going to help?

durp!

i found a cheap nylon brush cut flat worked well if stippled on, kind of like a wet drybrush consistancy to the paint

Probably a bit out of scope here, but a cheap airbrush does this pretty well with a fine tip. That's how I've done my Tau tanks. Citidel paints ran through my Aztek pretty well.

The method used by the 'Eavy Metal artist was on the GW website. They stipled (gently "jabbing" the tip of the brush slightly damp w/ paint against the surface - try not to smear!) Regal and Enchanted over Midnight, IIRC. A sponge would do nicely as well, as long as it's a natural sponge.

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell
