I am curious what everyone's thoughts are about IC models and paint schemes.
For example, even if you are using a 'counts as' Shrike, would you paint him using the RavenGuard scheme, or your own color scheme? Same goes for Marneus Calgar, Vulkan, Sicarius, etc.
In a way, I still feel that even though I am doing a 'counts as' it is still a Shrike model and should be painted as a RavenGuard.
What does everyone else think? Is that a silly notion? Would it confuse more people?
Thanks in advance,
-Pav

I use a counts as Shrike painted in my own armies color scheme, if you are planning on using the Marine special characters paint them in your own chapter scheme having a random RG or UM would look a tad silly

When I played smurfs, I always customized to my army. Not only does it create continuity, but it's what buying, painting and creating your own army is all about!

In your Army's colors. And give him a cool name too.

Army's colours - if I ever actually use one. I haven't managed to do it yet in 20+ years, can't see why I'd start now.

I'm considering starting a 1500 point SM CF army, using neither Kantor NOR sternguard (mainly so I can field it and go "Oh, No, kantor is currently busy leading everyone else's army. This guy is the 15th in line chapter latrine cleaner, acting as the CO" until he and his amtes get back.)

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

Thats exactly how Id look at it. Make up some fluff, give the guy a name, make him bad ass, still use the counts as rules. GW actually says thats what your suppose to do, thats why they made so many IC so they have a better chance of hitting your mark. Again making your own chapter then having a smurf there as your commander would be ridiculous

I think there's a consensus on this

Very good. I am actually surprised there is a unanimous consensus. Locally there are a few guys that are the other way. They say, Shrike is a RG so he should be painted RG. One even goes as far as suggesting his command squad should also be painted in RG colors.
Very interesting. Thanks everyone for the input!

There's nothing at all wrong with using a model and painting him in your own scheme. Just so long as you're not using zombies and giving them sacks that "count as" Orks with big shootas...

Wait would it be possible to use "count as" IC's for other chapters?
say Shrike for dark angels

I create my own characters and stories, and match them to the models and SCs I want.

I use a counts as Ghaz as my warboss, and his story is that he actually wears Ghaz's restored set of Mega Armour from the second war for Armageddeon(assuming that that set became heavily damaged and abandoned some time during the war). That way, the model makes sense, the custom paintjob makes sense

I'm not. Entire Chapters can be painted in whatever color scheme you want, but there
are still those who argue otherwise.

Like, use the Shrike RULES in your DA list?

No, because when you choose a DA army you're choose it using the army list in the DA codex, not the space marine one (even though the DA codex references the SM one). Shrike is not an option in the DA army list...

If I'm playing "counts as Shrike", he'll be equipped per Shrike's rules, but will be painted according to my army scheme.

I may incorporate some Shrike-like color or bitz elements, but that's as far as I would go. It's my army, so any Shrike-like character would have to conform to that, not the other way around.

Barring some weird setup for a scenario game, I would normally paint him with my chapter's colors.
