Feasting on the souls of unworthy opponents

Folks: I have both Ork and Tau, and a friend of mine runs a very unique IG army that I've yet to find a solution for.

Well, an Ork green swarm works because he can't make enough shots...but that's not what I want to do.

His list, whatever the size generally consists of a couple of Leman Russ battletanks and one of those heavy flamethrower tanks.

The rest of his army deep strikes. He has small units of things that deep strike around, and in general there's 1-2 heavy flamers per unit (S6 AP4) a plasma pistol or two, some other nasty guns, some crack grenades, melta bombs, and flashlight hits.

The real problem are those heavy flamers. AP4 and it ignores cover; both my tau and orks eat it, and even when I choose to go second, I'm always reacting to what he does - he deepstrikes near one of my units and burns them alive.

Any ideas?

Do you own any Ork nobs on Bikes?

As for tau mount all your units in devil fish, and wait him out.

If that fails play him for VP you will always win.

What is he putting heavy flamers on?

It's better to simply be an idiot, as no one can call you on it here. -H.B.M.C.

Cap'n Gordino's instant grammar guide:
"This is TOO expensive." "I'm going TO the store, TO get some stuff."
"That is THEIR stuff." "THEY'RE crappy converters."
"I put it over THERE." "I'll go to the store THEN."
"He knows better THAN that." "This is NEW." "Most players KNEW that."

If you can manage to win the roll for setup (or if he is stupid) opt to go second. When he says all his stuff is DSing in, say that all your stuff is in reserves. he drops in turn 2, you roll your stuff on afterwards. once his units are on the ground, they have lost their biggest advantage; being able to drop ON you. just chew his squishy guardsmen apart with ranged shooting. all that short-ranged firepower he uses is wasted.

Oldskool hit the nail on the head, I run a gaurd army very similar to what you are describing and when a smart opponant makes me drop down on an empty table its really rough on my boys.

You make him drop down on an empty board, then charge him. Don't forget, his heavy flamer units (which are str 5, not 6, btw) have a 6+ armor save.

if you cant get that to work, then you have to deploy smart. Use grots to form a buffer around your orks to prevent the flamers from landing in range.

With tau, start in trasports if you can, that way the flamers cant hose you.

It is a rough army to face for tau, orks, non nidzilla nids or eldar too. You just have to coutner the deepstrikers and use lootas to pop the hellhounds.

once you get the hang of proper deployment to protect yourself from deepstirkers you will find that it is a little easier to fight. It will help you against demons and pod marines as well.

I used this army all through 4th and I found it to be the best guard set up. Lots of tanks, lots of small squads with maxed special weapons, a few heavy weapon squads for spice and you have a nasty mix.

Kill points hoses that, but that is getting off of topic.

My friend isn't stupid by any means - he owns the local GW shop, and he's the one who taught me how to play in the first place (I've got about 5 months of 40k under my belt).

When I win the roll, I'd obviously go second against this and keep my forces in reserve, but I don't want to have to build an army specifically to beat his deep striking guard. I want my general armies (which perform phenomonally well) to be able to also beat his army.

I suppose holding my stuff in reserve is about the only thing I can do here. Although as Tau, I read an interesting concept elsewhere about giving my commander a positional relay and forcing my army to stay in reserve until turn X that I want.

You don't have to make an army to beat this one, it really just is about set up. That is how you counter any deepstriking army. Castle up in a corner (which admitedly works better for tau than orks) or set up a buffer zone in which he can't deepstrike next to anything important. Get vehicles out front or disposable trrops like kroot or grots to limit the area he can deepstrike or force him to take big risks with his deepstrikers.

Just remember not to spread out as his units can drop in and kill you piece meal that way. When he drops in, you have more kill power to bring to bear on him than he does on you. So, as long as you have your force fairly close together, yo should be able to shoot him off the board or multi charge his deepstrikers.

Good luck with it, kepp practicing and you will find ways to beat the deep strikers. Most people have trouble with these types of armies at first but some experience will teach you tricks to get around it.
