Special price on the WW2 German SPG. It's a meaty looking vehicle and should convert well for a Guard army.

The same vehicle by Dragon currently costs £35 in the UK. It should be possible to buy a couple of these and some other stuff and get it all cheaper from HLJ even including the cost of international postage.

Is 1/35 the best scale for 40k use?

YO DAKKA DAKKA!

I would say so. the next common step down is 1/48, and that is always a little too small.

It depends on the look you want.

Briefly, 1/48 are a bit narrow and lack height, while 1/35 are a bit long and tall.

I prefer 1/35 because I like my vehicles to look hulking and I find the 1/48 are a bit wimpy looking next to heroic scale figures.

I refer you to my article about using historical vehicle kits in 40K. It has the dimensions of all IG and SM tanks compared with historical models in 1/48 and 1/35 scales.

http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Scale_Model_Kits_for_40K

Another point is there is a much wider selection of kits in 1/35 scale.

I am not a historical grognard, so forgive the possibly silly question.

But isn't that the same thing as an Elephant?

I'm no expert. From what I've read, the Dicker Max was an experimental design and not manufactured in quantity. The Germans built a number of similar SPG vehicles in WW2, such as the Marder, the Hummel, the Nashorn, and so on.

Ahh makes sense then. From what I gather most of those with that design weren't manufactured with any high degree of numbers. War was over too quickly to ever use a lot of those on the eastern front.

I was just curious if that was just another name for the elephant or not.

No, it isn't an Elefant.

Elefant is based on Tiger / Panther mechanicals (sort of), whereas the Dicker Max is clearly using Panzer IV chassis.

In terms of designs, the Germans evolved their SPGs pretty quickly starting with the early Marder series, and moving on to the StuG IIIs. As Allied armor got heavier, you start to see JagdPanzer/Panther/Tiger appear, but those chassis were better used for actual tanks rather than SPGs which were well covered by cheaper StuG. Which is why the humble StuG is one of the most produced-vehicles.

No. The Ferdinand/Elephant was an enclosed, fully armored Tank Destroyer/Assault vehicle with an 88mm tank gun the same as in the Tiger. The Pz.Sfl.IVa 10.5cm Dicker Max, had an open topped, lightly armoured fighting compartment for the crew and gun. The gun was a larger AT gun which used a differen't breach block than a tank's gun, which needs more room and normaly has a slower rate of fire. The US & British used a similar layouts for thier Tank destroyers in an open turret, since it gave the crew better visability and the lighter armoured body ment less total weight and faster ground speed and quicker maunfacturing. The Ferdinand was built from leftover the Porshe Tiger tank prototypes that lost the design contest for the heavy tank contract and were ment to be used as an assault vehicle to break the enemy lines, like it was used at Kursk. There are pictures of Ferdinand following Goliath remote control bombs ( used to blow openings thorugh mine fields ) to assault infantry positions. A bad use of a vehicle that didn't have a machinegun. The Russian infantry learned to assault the vehicle as it passed by or they just nailed them with artillery barrages. The Elephant was the later development of the Ferdinand with better armour and a hull mounted machinegun.

Sorry to run on like that but I hope it helps.

To be precise, the Elefant uses the chassis of the so-called "Porsche Tiger", an alternative design that lost in the trials to the Henschel design.

The supply does not get to make the demands.

If you go to the top of the thread, the link direct to the product's page is the first line in the original post.

Heh, that's pretty interesting. It's a cool looking SPG. I didn't remember seeing it, but I think I might have once before. Probably because there were only ever two made...

I meant the Armored Car link, I don't really care much for the tank as I prefer the regular GW ones. But those cars look cool for sentinels or something else.
