I looked over my collection of fiction paperbacks the other day and noticed that virtually all the books I read are somehow War/Violence related. Mostly Fantasy and Historical thrillers (Cornwell, Scarrow etc..)with a few modern Thrillers (Clancy, Higgins etc..) and Crime novels thrown in. Basically all Violence related in some way.

I feel like a change, something a bit more about real life. Anyone got any recommendations for good books? Don't mind if they're light hearted or serious.

Erm no thanks. I would like a books aimed at men, not middle aged housewives.

I've read a few classic novels and many were quite good but in all honestly I'm thinking about something more modern. Something a bit like Nick Hornby for example (But obviously not Nick Hornby as I've read all his novels).

Confederacy of Dunces is highly lauded (I couldn't finish it, but it's good).

Most any Vonnegut - Slaughter-house Five, God Bless You Mr. Rosewater, and Breakfast of Champions are good'uns.

Life of Pi is supposed to be quite good.

There's an excellent german author called Andreas Eschbach who writes excellent "low" Sci-Fi novels which are not really violent. I'm not sure how his books are called in english though. Try searching for:
-One Trillion Dollars
-The Jesus Video
- The last of his kind

Achtung schweinhund is very good indeed.

there's a few reviews around of it-- like this one, so you're not just going off of my word. very funny and interesting, I liked the insights into the early wargaming scene and the people therein. Especially the collector whose hobby was taking pics of minis and job was taking shots of Penthouse magazine models. bastard.

None of you have offered a single suggestion that wasn't war/violence/fantasy/SF related.

Get a grip! Read the question!

There's a ton of out of copyright classic fiction available. Some of the books are £1 or you can download them off the Internet for free.

H Rider Haggard -- adventure
Charles Dickens -- social commentary
Arthur Conan Doyle -- detective

For something more modern, try some Martin Amis or Haruki Murakami.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

Erm, Confederacy of Dunces, Breakfast of Champions, God Bless You Mr. Rosewater, and Life of Pi aren't war/violence/fantasy/SF related.

Edit: Nor was lifeafter's suggestion of "As I Lay Dying"

I got bored of reading all the war/sf/violence/fantasy suggestions and flipped past those.

To be fair, a lot of Kurt Vonnegut's stuff is about war and/or SF.

I like to read Hemingway, some people can't stand his train of consciousness/thought writing though which is his own unique genius.

Wait, what? If you consider him to do the stream of consciousness thing, I wonder what you'd think of Joyce's Ulysses.

World War Z is an amazing book. Also Anything by Neil Gaiman, but particularly "American Gods," it's one of those books that I have read at least a dozen times, and love it every single time.
