Hello,
I have a friend of mine who wants to use Marneus Calgar at Adepticon in the 1850 40k Championships. He's been asking me for list ideas. I do not think he is a good choice in that setting and points value due to him costing 250+ points. I can't think of a reason to use him. Has anyone here have experience with using him successfully in games or a tournament setting? If so what would you use to accompany him? I was telling him to maybe throw him in a LR with T-Hammer termies for a start. I'm at a loss. I'm using a Vulcan list myself and that list writes itself.

Well, I never would use Marneus Calgar in a competitive setting at 1850 pts. He's a real point sink.

I personally find marneus to be the least impressive of all the marine characters. The love for him that other players have sort of baffles me.
He's worth 2 shooty terminators on the charge (6 PFist attacks), 3 if your target is WS4-5. Otherwise he lets you pass leadership checks? When has Ld been a problem for marines?
Tell your friend to drop marneus and pick up an entire UNIT of 6 assault terminators in his spot.

Lysander also has eternal warrior, and gets a thunder hammer. Marneus just isn't all that great.

Yeah, Lysander is still the best of the termie SC's not only due to cost, but stubborn is pretty damned handy and doesn't suffer from the negatives that fearless does.
All in all, I would rather have another squad of termies than calgar.

Try maxing out on Honor Guard if you want a real point sink.

Bit more to him then just the charge stat though.
-Orbital Strike. Lysander or a unit of assault terminators doesn't get that.
-God of War. In some ways better then stubborn and in some ways not. GoW is probably best for a shooty army that doesn't want models stuck in a combat from stubborn but could benefit from the option to go fearless sometimes.
-BS5 AP3 storm bolter that rerolls wounds. Worth about 3 storm bolters I guess in the scheme of things
-Rerolls wounds, teeny boost for the fists against MEq(might be pedantic but that does makes him better-ish then the numbers posted) and against those rare T7+ units. Also turns that power sword of his into 5 I5 lighting claw attacks on the charge.
-Better inv save and more wounds then the stock terminators mentioned.
Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't use em either but even so I made up a list recently for giggles with him in it. Could be stronger with someone else and could probably use a tweak here and there. Still a a start if this guy is really set on Calgar.

Remember that Marneus also has a power sword which basically counts as a lightning claw. Most people are under the impression that he must always strike at I1... this is definitely not the case.

Thanks guys. You all have summed up what I felt. I tried telling him that he's not that good but you know how it is when you a have a model that is painted nicely and you want to show it off.
