Subject: Which Eldar SHT to get?

Never-Miss Nightwing Pilot

I am having a bit of a dilemma in deciding which of the two Eldar Super Heavy Tanks I want to get first. For asthetics alone, I prefer the Cobra Mk. II over the Scorpion Mk. II. If these were just meant for display or collecting purposes, fine, problem solved. However, I very much intend for the tank to see HEAVY battlefield action.
This leads me to my connundrum. Which tank is better in the midst of an Apoc game? I have seen the rules for the Scorpion, so I have an idea about it's battlefield prowess but I know nothing about the Cobra. Naturally, it has the same basic stats as the Scorp, but the gun is different. I don't want quoted rules from books or anything like that, but does anyone have a basic outline of the Cobra's main gun? I assume it's a "Titan/SHT hunter" in design and not likely an anti-infantry weapon.
I guess I would really like is some comparative opinions from the masses who have some knowledge of the two tanks.
As it stands, I am leaning towards the Cobra. I just don't want to waste $200 right now on a tank that is nigh on useless in our Apoc games that feature infantry and normal vehicle rich environments.

Well, the Cobra has a Distortion Cannon (at least it did in E40K) and those are effective infantry killers

Scorpion: better anti-armor/anti-superheavy role, as the pulsar fires more. Much better range, too, if you're dealing with large battlefields. Also marginally points-cheaper.
Cobra: better anti-infantry role, as the D-cannon uses the HUGE template.

I'd get the Revenant simply because it'll be easier to put together. Given FW's horrible casting quality the flat hull plates of the tanks could be impossible to align properly.

First off, you should be choosing based on looks, not performance...
You don't need our permission to get the Cobra.
That said, the relevant stats are:
Cobra: G48" S-D AP2 Heavy 1 10" Ordnance, 600 pts
Scorpion: R60" S-D AP2 Heavy 2 5" Ordnance, 500 pts
The Scorpion can double-tap enemy supers, and lets you squeeze in another unit.
The Cobra hits twice as much stuff.
Neither is a bad choice, so just get the Cobra as that's what you really want.

According to IA apocolypse, the Scorpion's pulsars are twinlinked, making it a more accurate tank as well. I think that the standard rule in these sorts of situations should be: buy the model that you'll never regret having. The cobra is more specialized, but there are times you'll really wish you had the scorpion: longer range, more accurate, better at shutting down super heavies, and almost as good at taking out infantry as the Cobra.

No Revenants. I already have one and they are a good deal more expensive at about $50 more. I know $50 isn't that much, but its a good quarter of the second tank's cost!!! (I feel like I'm trying to use man-logic on my wife here...)
Well, as far as utility is concerned, the Scorpion would be the better choice. I have three titans and one flyer (Void Dragon) already. At the FLGS I play at, one guy has a Stompa and two have Baneblades. There may be a Battle Fortress among one or two of the Apoc-class Ork players, but there has been no showing of one on a table yet. Nobody else has titans or other super-heavies. Unless I bring my Warhound or Shadowswords for use on the other side, some people whine about me bringing Titans. So, I figured I would get an SHT of my own for those times when I feel bad for bringing Titans (men with sand in their vaginas piss me off).
This means that the Scorpion is the best choice for me from the game-play aspect. Asthetically, the Cobra wins out hands down. That short range is really a bummer, though. Considering the fact that I am buying one or the other to PLAY with, it looks like I should go for the Scorp and get the Cobra in a couple more months (when the Scorp finally arrives...)
Have any of you grizzled Apoc veterans faced off against either (or both) of these tanks? Any observations about combat effectiveness from your point of view?

People... Read the f'n posts before you reply. The Revenant is NOT an SHT (Super Heavy Tank) nor is it even an option in this thread.
As I said in my last post, I already have a Revenant and do not want another right now.

I think it matters what size board you play on as well. The bigger the board, the more the extra range of the Scorp helps out. If there are no Super Heavies, however, the big 10" S: D weapon of the cobra will carve up vehicle formations: that's a penetrating hit on every vehicle hit. One lucky shot in the middle of a battelwagon phalanx and you can do a ton of damage. That's a trick that'll work once and then they'll start spreading out their armor a bit more. The scorpion is simply more accurate and more likely to put down the biggest threat on the board.

You think the Scorpion will be better against large numbers of Lootas?!?
Oh, you meant Titans. ( AV 12 tanks, superheavy or not, don't care for lootas.)
Personally, I think the Cobra wins on aesthetics alone. If I'm going to drop the coin on FW, I want the most attractive package available.

I will post a relevant comment and say IMO the Cobra is a much sexier tank than the Scorpion, though if i had the money for both, both would be in my collection.

The Revenant. It's the best piece of SHT the Eldar can get their hands on!

Cobra. Looks much cooler, not to mention realistic (as far as gravity defying super heavy tanks go!).
The turret on the Scorpion just looks silly. Have a complimentary 'What a piece of SHT" joke.

Arguably, yeah. Depending on how the Lootas are set up, the much more accurate pulsars might do more damage than the larger D-cannon. Most players deploy the lootas in a rough line or oval, and two 5" blasts isn't much worse than a single 10" blast in those cases. Throw in the really good chances that the 10" blast scatters pretty far, and the scorpion at least keeps it close. OTOH the cobra can fire indirectly, and those gain at least a cover save from enemy shooting, if blocking the shot.

I hate you.
So, the Cobra is clearly the cooler, better-looking tank. It seems that the Scorpion is the wiser choice for utility; more accurate, longer range, anti-vehicle and anti-infantry.
We play on an area made up of four 4'x6' tables with a fairly hefty amount of terrain. Few of the other players are willing to spend any money on Forge World and fewer still are willing to put in a little time and scratch build anything. The majority of the players bring lots of infantry and normal 40k vehicles. I do have a Sunstorm squadron of 6 Fire Prisms, so that gives me a 60" weapon system on par with the Scorpion with less staying power.
With that criteria in place, the aesthetic angle, and the opinons voiced in this thread, the choice is simple... I need to get a...
REVENANT TITAN!!!
I mean, uhhh, Cobra.

All D-weapons deny cover saves, direct-fire or otherwise.
The 10" template scatters 3" or less, 2/3 or the time. You will still hit your original target on any scatter roll of 9 or less ( BS 4) (8/9 of the time).
Both very much have their specializations, with some overlap. But the Cobra just plain looks cooler.

This is true.
I fire a lot of pie under 5E rules, and if you can see the target, you will generally hit it, either outright, or via small scatter.
The 10" template is much more fun, so just take it.
