I doubt he needs the money. Not only has he almost certainly become independently wealthy from endorsement deals, but swimming is hardly the sport of commoners. Pool time isn't cheap.

Yeah, but a dip in performance for an olympian is still unacceptable. It's not a monetary thing, those lungs (and his freakish longcat body and giant feet) are his ticket to more medals, and thus medals for his team and nation.

Oh, come on! He probably got sick and tired of being under the microscope of public scrutiny all the time. Now he can fade into the background and go back to being a regular person. Remember, these days everybody may get their fifteen minutes, but that's all.

I don't know man. All the elite athletes I've known during my time as a sport-specific have been able to handle their fair share of toxins. Yeah, every drink you take diminishes your capacity to recover to at least some degree, but there is also something to be said for psychological health. Not many people can keep to an ascetic life style while maintaining the kind of will to win, and train, that is necessary at the very top.

True. Keep in mind, he had a DUI not so long ago. I would chalk this up more to social irresponsibility concerning his position then I would any sort of necessary measure for him to keep functioning in the inevitably high stress lifestyle he lives.

Looks like if you are the greatest swimmer ever you get away with the use of prohibited drugs.

The chief executive of the US anti-doping agency Travis Tygart has told the Reuters newsagency that smoking marijuana out of competition is not an anti-doping matter, but he added that Phelps will still pay a huge penalty.

I wonder how big that penalty will be when the US Olympic committee think Phelps might scoop another 4-6 medals in London 2012. (Assuming we can afford to build the swimming pool, of course.)

Um, i believe the IOC's position is that it's banned during meets/events but no harm no foul in your free time (outside of testing periods for said meets)

Why are people acting shocked and surprised that he smokes dope? I have never done so, but it's not something that I would consider uncommon either. The current president and at least the two previous have most likely taken a bong hit at least once (and maybe a more than once, might explain somethings about Dubya).

1. I mentioned that it's obvious he's been smoking dope. Any interview you've seen
with him makes it obvious that he smokes dope.

Why would anyone be so offended by this? If anything, this makes it more impressive that he won all of those gold medals, not less so, as "The only way that marijuana could be considered a performance enhancing drug is if there was a big f*ckin' Hershey Bar at the end of the run."

He'll probably end up getting probation. 'Use of prohibited drugs' gets penalized depending on the severity of said drug. YMMV. But I can almost guarantee that it's at least been attempted for him to be charged with posession.
