After painting a dozen or so Orks last night from my AoBR set, I got the itch to try my hand at one of those hated Space Marines I vowed never to dabble in. Well, feels like I was cheating on my Orks, but I actually enjoyed it. I've always been a huge fan of the Mentor Legion ever since WD 98, so that was my first choice. The hardest part was painting the white, as the GW stuff seems to dry pretty quick and I had to thin it down to avoid it drying as I spread it and clump up. I used the washes pretty heavily to get the green but I'm not too thrilled at how the highlights came out. Honestly, this is a pretty big rush job (about an hour, you can tell by the horrid eyes) and one which I would have spent more time on except that it was 1:00 in the morning.

I might end up painting the whole set now that I've started it. Who knows, I might even field them. A man can only be denied an armor save so many times in a game, ya know?

Nice.

Clean, pretty good quality White; lovin' the green.

Good start.

We laughed at him, we leagued with him, old chum.
No soldier's paid to kick against His powers.
We laughed - knowing that better men would come,
And greater wars: when each proud fighter brags
He wars on Death, for lives; not men, for flags.

Nice job on the Green, and the details picked out in red and gold are very good.

The white is a bit bland -- it's very hard to get any contrast or highlighting on pure white. You could try a very pale grey with white highlight.

Of course if it's just the flash photography, ignore me.

Heh, I painted a bunch of 2nd Ed SMs last night as Mentor Legion too. Not finished yet, but I am planning to include 1 squad of tac marines in a rhino in a primarily Lamenters army. Mine are not getting such nice treatment though. Some basic washes on the white and highlighting on the green only.

I do have quite a nice model from 15 years ago though, just before I quit GW until December just gone. I'll try to get a photo and post him. Maybe my one Lamenter from back then too.

Thanks for all the positive feedback. I don't necessarily 'hate' this model, its just I'm a severe perfectionist when it comes to my exacting standards on my own work. I'll admit that the white does look a bit bland, but sadly there is not a whole lot to do with that. I am, however, going to line the next models with gray instead of with black wash, as I think it might defuse the color a bit. That and add three layers of green instead of just the base and highlight. I went ahead and redid the eyes, as they were kinda bugging me. I'll post more when I finish em.

By the way, I've always been a fan of using insignia to designate between squads, specializations, and companies. I know they offer a ton of info for Ultramarines, but how do you guys use paint to designate company, squads, and other such stuff for other chapters?

Ahhh Mentors, they had some funky stuff in those little 5-man squads. Those were good times in WD.

I'm surprised that you went green. You'd figure you'd get tired of that color after painting all of those Orks.

Extremely nice paint job for only being done in one hour.

Not too familiar with Space Marine insignia, or I would help you out.
