Skink Chief with Poisoned Javelins
|
With the release of the new Lizardmen Codex in....4 days or so, I thought up an interesting strategy which might be quite effective (or not).
I call it the Kroxi Cannon System.
For 40 points, you can get 8 skinks to protect any Kroxigor in your army (effectively, anyway.)
Pros:
2/3 chance of a wound going on a Skink
poisoned shots to soften up targets
outnumbering
command options
Cons:
Unwieldy
Kroxigor still potentially killable
(add your own here)
Comments welcome.

CONS:
When you get into combat the skinks are easier to kill than pretty much any model in the game.
Instant combat res for the enemy.
As skinks get mown down by shooting- panic tests (I admit they are unlikely to fail one)

I'm sorry to say this, but what is your clever strategy? To use one of the new options in the book in a way that is neither a surprise nor unique? I don't understand.
Also, remove "outnumber" from the pro column - one Krox and 8 skinks doesn't outnumber much.
Why are you calling it the KCS, anyway? because it protects the Krox from cannons? I think cannons will be pointed at the Steggies instead.

Which is kind of disappointing. I hope that varied and interesting builds somehow develop. I really don't want to see a one note army.

A GW worker at my local GW is currently building 4 kroxigor + 32 skink units for his 3000 point army. 3 of them IIRC.
I'd rather stegadons though too... which is why my 6 spear chukka NG army (2250pt) is about to be upgraded to 8 spear chukkas.

I call it the KCS because the Kroxigor functions as a cannonball to bowl through the enemy. It needs a better name.
This costs less than 100 points, and it's a core choice.

I agree with you, new dude, about the fierceness of the Kroxy/skink unit. Obviously if the enemy swings on the skinkies they'll get CR, but they shouldn't be doing that too much. You've got the 12" charge, and you can flee (and at <100 points, you can afford to).
You can even throw the thing at a unit with a hero and devote the kroxies to char killing (a bit hail mary, but you get lucky some times), then flank them with a better unit when they run down your kroxy/skink unit. I think the new hybrid units are useful.
|
All in all, fact is that Warhammer 40K has never been as balanced as it is now, and codex releases have never been as interesting as they are now (new units and vehicles and tons of new special rules/strategies each release -- not just the same old crap with a few changes in statlines and points costs).

HEs and DEs (infantry) are goin to really struggle vs this unit at larger (3 or more Kroxi).
Even with the ASF and great fighting skills they would be after the kroxigor as the kroxigor are going to smash them back, and even the skinks should get 1 or 2 wounds in....

It's actually 105 points as the skinks are a minimum of 10. 50 for the 10 guys, 55 for the one
dude, = 105.
It seems like a nice way to add Fear causers into your army.

Minimum point costs (/w full command)
1 Krox = 50 + 55 + 22 = 127 and 1 rank bonus
2 Krox = 80 + 110 + 22 = 212 and 3 rank bonus (I think)
3 Krox = 120 + 165 + 22 = 307 and 3 rank bonus

8 is now the min skink unit? 0_o
allways thought it was 10 or 12.
but anyways, its an old tactic that used to be used quite a bit.
a cannonball is still able to kill a krox and the odd skink in the way.
bolt throwers will go through the skinks.
a unit of knights with a base save of 2+ wont have much to fear on the charge.
also, just a note to anyone thats seen anything in the new liz book, any chance the army of kroq-gar is still in there?
long story short you could take saurus cav. as troop and warriors as special
and now krox actually have a model that looks good since the '96 ones

It's still 10 minimum, but you can buy a krox for every 8 skinks.

You can only take 1 Saurus Cavalry as Core with Kroq.

My opponent on the weekend took 2 units of 10 skink cohorts without kroxigor.
With muso = 66 points each IIRC.
Thanks to their 12 inch march he was using them as redirectors to protect his saurus units.
And they could throw their javelins. :(
1 died in a hail of squig hoppers, the other survived the game with 7 models left.
