Hi Everyone
Im not sure if this has been covered in the past but I couldn't find an answer anywhere.
In my local 40k group there has been some discussion about when a Monolith can deep strike. My understanding of the rules would suggest that the Monolith is held in reserve until it becomes available to deep strike after rolling for it as normal reserves. However my friend believes that they can deep strike in Round 1 citing the first sentence in the Monolith deep strike entry in the codex where it says "A Necron attack is often STARTED by Monoliths teleporting to the surface..." and also pointing out the rules for Drop Pods in the recent SM codex.

What do you all think?

Necron attack is often STARTED by Monoliths teleporting to the surface ... but this doesn't happen till manages to roll for reservers. Earliest that can happen is turn 2.

The 'A necron attack is started bit' is just fluff.

The rules for drop pods are in a different codex. That's like me saying 'yeah, ork boyz can charge 12" because hormagaunts can!'

Well ork boys simply dont have the beast rule. Hormaguants ftw.

Tell that dude to read the rule on reserves and then ask him what he thinks? Also suggest he base his descions purely on the rules section in the BGB and appropriate codexes

EXCEPT DROP PODS AND DAEMONS AND CAPS LOCK

Interceptor Drones can disembark at any point during the Sun Shark's move (even though models cannot normally disembark from Zooming Flyers).

The idea is that it takes extra effort and time to write properly, and they’d rather save the time. If you can still be understood, what’s the harm? While most of the time a sloppy post CAN be understood, the use of proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling is generally seen as respectable and desirable on most forums. It demonstrates an effort made to be understood, and to make your post an easy and pleasant read. By making this effort, you can often elicit more positive responses from the community, and instantly mark yourself as someone worth talking to.

Wait, what? Oh, ummm.... nevermind that. Unless the rules in their codex says something different for that army, deepstrike is always 2nd turn plus.

Not only is it a differant Codex, its a codex written 2 game editions later.

And if you want to get technical with that phrase it says "often" not always. So for the game you get Reserves like most everyone else

EDIT: Your posts may be BOLD, but I ask you.. are they daring?

Feasting on the souls of unworthy opponents

Even fluff-wise, monoliths deep striking CAN herald the beginning of a necron attack. Scarabs / destroyers turbo-boosting across the board towards the enemy lines, who are concentrating fully on the threat (they can't attack till turn 2 anyway) and suddenly WHAM! Monolith deep strike: Monolith poops out 20 necron warriors and its game on.

I have a friend who does that very effectively. Two monoliths, all warriors in reserve. Scarabs and destroyers jet across the field fast, to get into shoot / assault range, and then the monoliths deep-strike in and try quartering or halving the game table and annihilating a portion of your army piecemeal. They crap out the reserve warriors out of the monoliths, and as long as one monolith is left standing, reserves can still come out of it.
