If your committed to the army i would suggest just getting some Warriors. You know you'll need them and its an effective way to test paint schemes without potentially ruining your centerpiece models (Not that you would ).

Hello and welcome to DE!

I second the previous poster's suggestion about the Warriors, although if you want something that looks nice and is fun to paint/assemble then might I suggest Reaver Jetbikes. They are great models and welcome in all DE armies

Also (this is a shameless plug) I am selling a apoc ready Dark Eldar army over on the Swap and Shop forum

If you are interested as I mentioned I am flexible on the payment terms.

The strength of the Dark Eldar army are cheap skimmer transports that mount big guns. An excellent start for you would be to buy a few squads of Warriors along with a Dark Eldar Raider for each squad.

Yes but bikes are always welcome I use anywhere from 5-15 in my setup

I'd just wait. They are so outdated and the new 'dex will be out soon...hopefully.

id say just get a battle force, comes with a bit of everything that you'll eventually want. and you have plenty of practice stuff to paint with.

I think waiting for a the projected new release is silly...it may be a while. I don't have a problem with the current model range, so if you're happy with them, I'd say go for it.

Really, there are only a few core units to pick from. Warriors, raiders, wyches, ravagers, any HQ and incubi are all good. Some like bikes, but I'm not usually impressed with them. Hellions, grots, mandrakes and scourges should probably be avoided.

As for painting, I find they're pretty easy overall. You can make things really easy by painting them one color, give them a metallic helmet, then wash with a dark color to darken the crevices. Quick, simple and looks pretty good.

Yep, warriors and raiders are your best bet. They are a must in any army you build and to echo other post, relatively easy to paint. Next up i would say wyches, really nice models to paint once your get your sea legs. I also mix wych models from 40k and fantasy if you want a little variety in the models. Those two are your usual suspects, from there it's a choice of what you want to field. I would build a army list post it, and go from there, also good luck in tracking down the army. Your best bet is online ie. swap shop, ebay, barter town ect. By the way nice choice in picking DE i love'em, fast and dirty, just like i like my . . coffee

A lot of people like the Incubi models, thinking they're some of the best in the army, but I'm not a fan. I bought the Dark Elf version (executioners, I think?) and have been very pleased.

Orks love them... because of how little of a dent they put into a mob of boyz.

Tri-disintegrator Ravagers on the other hand, are hated by every general except the DE I'd try to pick up at least two of those, they're one of the best HS slots in the game.

Trust me, that's not all that different Back when I was going to start Dark Eldar (even bought 2000 points worth) I was going to do a dark red/bone color scheme, but then I got unemployed and had to sell the army before I even put it together.

Now that I'm doing a CWE army, I'm getting a chance to use the same color scheme though: dark red, bone, black, and gold. It looks spiffy.

Word on the street says that support for them is going away. No new codex, no new models, nothing.

That aside, they are still a powerful army if you stick to the few units in the codex that are good. To start off, you're going to want 2 troops and an HQ. Since the HQ models (from any army really) tend to be "center pieces" with all kinds of tricky detail, I would suggest you wait for later on that one. So that leaves troops and nothing says troops to dark eldar like warriors. You'll also want to get a raider for them so that would work out for your second project. Once you got your two troops all set up, then you may be ready to tackle your HQ. If not, expand to some ravagers or jetbikes or wytches...whatever tickles your fancy.

Oh yah, and if you want sparkles, you can do a very very light dry brush of silver on the models after they are painted. It gives them a little bit of sparkle. Just be careful when you do it, if you put it on too heavy, it starts to gray things out.

I use this effect for my harlequins and it works rather well.

yeah, if you don't want to be re-gluing have your miniatures constantly, plastic glue is very important. Thanks for the complement on my Farseer. As Eldar are the second army I've painted I should hope I've got a bit of practice in though

My first models ever were painted with Testors enamel paints (the kind for model cars) and they're... well they're something.

i agree with plastic glue
super glue is a bitch at times, allways falling apart, and when getting both hands in the right possition super glue has no give, so needs to be in the right place straight away.

Suffused with the dying memories of Sanguinus, the warriors of the Death Company seek only one thing: death in battle fighting against the enemies of the Emperor.

I hate to be that guy... but... I don't suggest plastic glue, the reason being that it melts, and sometimes warps the models. Also if / when the new DE codex comes out you may want to remove arms and add different weapons.

yeah in like 4 years lol. And I agree that super glue is also a better way to go because you can go back later and mod your guys, while plastic glue will just bond the model.

lol ok now im just confused. i managed to glue the base to my thigh and the model to my hand yesterday so i think for safetys sake im going to get the plastic glue. or im going to be missing skin all over the place!

If you're that messy with glue though... plastic glue ruins the detail on any plastic it touches... maybe get better hands?
