I'm somewhat torn of what to put in my army I currently have 2 dakka tyrants 2 dakkafex's 2 boom fex's 2 gun fex's in my 1750 list. Is this a good set up or is 4 dakka fex's/ 4 boom fex's better?

For those of you that aren't familliar

Dakkafex= carnifex- 2 TL devourers enhanced sences 113

Boomfex= carnifex- barbed strangler scything talons 113

What do you think is best?

Personally I go with the dakka fexes. 8 re-rollable to hit and to wound shots normally do very well against infantry armies and generally will kill more than a boomfex's gun. Although one downside is that you do give up shooting range and a CC attack, generally the massed shots make up for that loss. If you face more vehicle or armored opponents then you may want to get the boom fexes, but generally the dakka fex is good.

I agree, I have 4 dakka fexes, but in practice I was constantly surprised at how often I was deseprately shooting them at rhinos... and how often they were ending up in hth where they were hurt by A2.

Now I'm not so sure. I am begining to think the boomfex may be better because it could still be good (not as good, as dakka) against light infantry with the big blast, be better against vehicles with the range and S8, and better in Hth with the extra attack...

But the most important detail, it is still cheap enough to be an elite choice...

I'm torn, I like them both. I voted other, for both.

... Er hate to bring this up but didn't FAQ state that if 2 of the same weapons are taken it counts as a single TL weapon ... so 2 devourers = 1 TL devourer ... so thats 4 shots... So i vote the Boomfex!

... ah my mistake ... as people have posted they come pre TL ... completely forgot about that

They come, as standard, TL. Meaning if you get two - you simply have two twin-linked weapons.

Boomfex. Why would you ever cap the possibly strength of a weapon below its possible maximum. The boomfex can do what no other unit can do whilst other units can quite easilly replace the dakkafex.

Yes, it does state 2 of the same weapon counts as a single Twin-Linked Weapon. However, that same FAQ also states that 2 separate Twin-linked weapons are just that, 2 Twin-linked Weapons, so 2 Twin-Linked Devourers = 8 Shots on Fex.

"Q. If a Carnifex or Hive Tyrant has two twinlinked
devourers or deathspitters (ie. four of the
same weapon), does it get to fire two twin-linked
weapons? In other words, does firing a twinlinked
weapon count as firing one or two
weapons?
A. Firing a single twin-linked weapon counts as
firing one weapon, so a Carnifex/Tyrant so armed
gets to fire two twin-linked weapons."

Both guns have their uses. Against marines the dakkafex is superior. Against orks the boomfex owns. My vote goes to other (for both).

And to help Yermon out a bit. Put more dakkafexes in the elite slot if your not sure. I run Gunfexes (VCs and BSs) for my heavy support options, and dakka fexes are a waste in that slot if you ask me. 2 dakkafexes +1 BS fex in the elites slots, plus you can always get a dakkatyrant if you feel you don't have enough dakka.

Lets also not forget the fact that you can make use of the boom fex's increased range to stay out of hand to hand if you want.

I say why not 2 dakkafexs and a Gunfex (VC and BS) and have some points to spare...

why put a BS on a fex and not give him the VC so that he can mess up tanks more effectively?

Well, because the VC only glances, for <AV14 that makes other weapons more atractive.>

augustus, venom cannon can glance AV 14, barbed does nothing to it.

i would go with boom fex.
more range, nice large blast, and overall just looks more scary

Depends a lot on the armies you face the most.

For MEQ go with the dakka fex. With the surge in popularity in Orks and the Guard dex right around the corner the Boomfex is probably a better choice.

@JD21290...the BS can in fact also glance AV14. There's just a lot less chance.

The eye of terror.

I'd go for the boomfex. With tyranids, since your mobility is generally not as good as other armies, range becomes the next important tactical asset to hinder your opponent's board control.

Also, against marines, they'll often bunch up thinking that their armor will protect them from blasts, as long as there aren't any battle-cannon or plasma cannon on the table, and you can use that to your advantage to get more potential hits than the dakkafex.

If you give him the VC, he can't be elite anymore.

3 gunfexes fill the heavy slot, then 1 boomfex plus 2 dakkafexes in elites. If you want more dakka add a tyrant to the mix.

I'd say the OP's setup is reasonable, two of each. Perhaps even 3 Dakka/3 Boomfex, might be reasonable.
