K , i understand if i order from USA ( im canadian ) i dont get charge with american tax,
but its fair that i get charge with canadian tax i guess?

But what if its a trade? where both side already paid our share of tax,
should we be taxed again twice when we trade across border?

How should i expect from this situation 0.o? im so confused!

Somewhere in south-central England.

In the UK, private sales -- that is, non-commercial sales -- are not subject to sales tax. I don't know about import/export between countries.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Here in Oz, there was no sales tax payable on 2nd hand goods (what most 'trades' tend to be.). Now we have a gst, there's none of it payable on these goods either.

Externally, Import duties ARE still payable if the item(s) are valued at over $900AUD.

If you buy something from a US store, you will have to pay taxes and some fee. (in french: dédouanement, don't have any idear how to say it in english) And this fee can get big.

If you trade, I'm not sure what the LAW is, but I did it without problem. 2 or 3 times.

I might be able to answer, I work for Garmin and I have to handle shipments of units out to Canada all the time. If you are buying from a non-commercial store(such as swap and shop) you will not have to pay any kind of taxes. However if you were to purchase from the USA GW store this is when taxes will occur. You may also have to pay custom and duty fees. These fees are dependent on the size and weight of the packaging mostly, these fees can get pretty nasty. Though the customs office may hold your package for a set about of days as well until they release it. Hope that helps.

And by marking it Gift from the US to Canada, for a purchase.. you are breaking US Law.

Possibly Canadian Law too, but that I am not sure of.

Generally if you put it under gift , not wrapped , and excessive amount, they'll know you are attempting
to dodge tax, and charge you extra heavily.

Im not trying to dodge any tax though, just figured where the logic in paying 2 times ( or as many time
as people attempted to trade ) the tax is about if we purchased /paid tax in our country already before the trade.

Thus declaring gift makes some sense in a way :/

If you're trading with someone in the US, have them mark the value at an appropriate amount, and ensure thaty they put "Metal toy models" or "plastic toy models" on the customs form.

They should NOT amrk them as a gift, as (which has been pointed out), it's against the law.

Provided the value is low (I think it's $20 US for Canadians), and they're marked as models, you shouldn't have to pay any customs at all.

Unless it's a HUGE amount involved, don't worry about your US counterpart. We have pretty easy going customs. He's not likely to have taxes.

Now, as far as the taxes you're paying... it's not a sales tax, which is what you both paid. It's an import tax, basically. That's far different than the tax you both paid already.

I've done nearly 150 trades, and porkuslime's done over 300... Many trades, for each of us, have involved Canada, and we both have experience as Moderators on Bartertown. We have both experienced plenty of info, regarding international trades.
Don't lie on your forms, report the value honestly and ensure that they're marked as "Toy models" (presuming they ARE miniatures), and you're not likely to see fees.

Check your postal service's web site for specifics on value and what won't be taxed.

@ MM , usually i do trades over $200 -$300 no less at a time. That means since its not the lower $20 region im most garunteed to be taxed right?

If its that case, if we keep trading back and forth everytime we want something different, does that means we have to pay the tax everytime?

That felt so wrong lol.

Well. like I said, check your postal service's web site. Models might be altogether discluded, regardless of value.

Otherwise, yes. Every time you have a package come into Canada, you'll pay Import Duties (customs) on it.

In general, I don't like to do cross-border trades because tracking / confirmation is a pain.

This is correct.

I've always marked as "toy soldiers" or just "toys" when I shipped, and never had a problem.
