Let's start of with something simple:
Vegetable soup.

To start with get a soup bowl.
Measure the inside of the bowl and cute out the desired size of circle in some plasticard or any other kind of thin modelling material.
Glue the plasticard circle to the inside of the soup bowl, and glue it in the desired color.(I used kommando khaki)
Cut out some vegetables out of foam cart, for example a carrot and cut these in small parts, cut out an angle of the carrot parts and glue these to the surface of the circle so that they seem to float on the soup.
Paint the vegetables in the desired color.

And as a finishing tough add a layer of water effect.
