I used a Necron army for the first time in a battle and
I think I may have used the veil of darkness option
wrongly. After consulting with my opponent I invoked the
veil in the first turn and only rolled a scatter dice
and 2 d6 for scatter distance.I now wonder if I should
have rolled for deep strike and only use it from my
second turn.Am I right in this?

The veil only works like deep strike it doesn't convey the deep strike ability so you can use it on the first turn to move your lord and one unit within 6 inches of him that is already on the board. You cannot start in reserve and then deep strrike in on future turns.

Indeed.

You can use veil of darkness on the first turn. You can use veil of darkness EVERY turn. You can veil in somewhere, rapid fire into someone, and next turn veil back out. Alternatively, you could veil in somewhere (your lord having a rez orb) and rapid fire, and let your unit get decimated. Then you take your WBBs and regain 50%-ish of your casualties. Then you teleport to your monolith for a second round of WBBs.

I can't tell you the number of times that I've spent an entire army's turn shooting down a necron warrior squad only to have all but one or two, or even ALL OF THEM get back up next turn via two WBBs.

Just remember that it carries the same blessing and curse of deep strike. You can mishap like a deep striking unit, scatter somewhere unpleasant, and you're going to be stuck in tight formation until your next turn - Imagine if you got any of the various ordance blasts dropped on you. Strength 9 AP3, Strength 7 AP3....just be careful.

i use veil of darkness alot of the time and as everyone has said you have used it correctly, it is especially useful when you are on the last turn and you need to take or contest an objective, possibly forcing a draw or winning in some cases in that sort of game

When a Necron Lord veils a squad out of combat, what happens to the unit that gets left behind? Do they get to reform at all?

I don't think so, since the combat was never resolved. You use VoD in the movement phase, so the warriors and Lord aren't there some the assault phase. I would guess the enemy is too busy wondering where their opponents went (and possibly recovering from being shot by the Veiled unit) to consolidate or do much at all.

Since there's no reform, could you position your warriors in a manner to maximize Monolith shots? Say, perhaps in an inverted crescent?
