So, I have a subscription to WD and got the new one today (lots of stompy goodness and a really awesome Apoc batrep) but I noticed that the cover price was 9 dollars! Is that correct? Did I somehow get a canadian copy or something?

The rather substandard Canadian version is a dollar more ($10) so count your blessings that you didn't get one.

It was 350 but doesn't seem any thicker, at least at a glance. 300 was noticably more.

Its 9 Bucks.

Wipe the egg from your face. The magazine STILL sucks at any price.

The Ork "Cities of Deff" article out recently was an example of great content, as was the painting faces article in the same issue

You know, if there was a decent piece of usable material (scenarios and/or alternate rules, etc.) and a modeling article in there for each system, it would be worth at least $7, possibly $9. Sadly, I have to page through to see if it's all (poor) tactics articles and ads these days.

They're still filling the pages and still paying writers when they publish useless puff pieces (not to mention the utterly useless Standard Bearer rambles). Why not pay that cash for (gasp) decent content? I must say, whoever runs the LOTR section has their head screwed on straight and a near-endless supply of rules etc. (I don't play LOTR, but do read that section. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong about the quality of the LOTR stuff!). Why can't the (more popular, more heavily supported) games get that attention/approach? It's not like Little Jimmy will be offended by too may big words or anything.

Infinity: Way, way better than 40K and more affordable to boot!

I enjoy this hobby for the game. Painting is ok at best, convereting and modeling can be fun, but I pay to play. white dwarf has had dubious value for me since chapter approved got tanked.

9 bucks is money that could go toward models. Forget it. I might buy just to help support my FLGS. But 3 digits for for a yearly subscription? Puh-leeeze. Anyone trying to snowjob me into believing that that magazine is worth it, is just showing their true inner selves. Save it, I don't care, it's not my business.

It is a waste of money the content has been quite boring and its basically an advertesment.

It died when they did away with the old battle reports where the player said exactly what moves they did. Now the reports are so vague you don't gain any tactical insight or build up to the final fights for objectives etc.

Plus, we don't need GW ads. If you play GW games (which you will since you buy the mag) then you will know roughly what is in the range anyway.

If someone gave you a free copy of White Dwarf you'd feel ripped off now.

Personaly, I think it's getting better. The Cities of Deff and facepaint article are the best examples. It's not Keanu Reeves "Woah" worthy, but definetly a step in the right direction. And it was the WD where I first heard (reliable) stuff about the Shadowswordbladeofbane tank.

There's several 'problems' with White Dwarf. Primarily its price, but also its content (the quality of the content is fine - I'll explain later).

Price - $8.00 per mag is absurd and $80.00 for a subscription is even more absurd. The mag should be $4.50-$5.00 no more (this is in caparison to mags of greater size, no. of pictures, picture quality and paper quality) and a subscription $25-$30.

Subscription vs. Content - The inherent problem with a subscription is that in order to make it worth having, you must play two or more GW games. One mag might be bias to 40K and the next bias to WFB. Well... if you only play 40K, then you just tossed $ away on that issue you have little interest in reading.

Agreed. The magazine has failed to deliver any really nice articles lately... within the last year I've purchased 3 and before the year 2006 I have back issues going back to 2002. So sad.

The idea of paying that amount of cash for what is, in essence, a sales catalogue and promotion publication, is totally out of the question for me. WD used to have games reviews from other companies, miniature reviews from other companies and book reviews, it had painting masterclasses and conversions guides. Buying WD now is like paying for those little pamphlets you get in the tv guide trying to sell you plants, the pics are pretty but the publication is ultimately useless.

Ask yourselves when you actually learnt something from an issue (other than the ongoing and painful realisation of just how overblown JJ's opinion is). There isn't even a new release in the pages that you won't have seen 5 months prior on the interwebs.

To be fair, I like White Dwarf. It has lots of pictures and tips and such, and while not much is groundbreaking it is certainly a good read. I play 40k and Fantasy as well as at least owning pretty much all the specialist games.

9 bucks just is a bit pricy.

Current White Dwarf is nothing but an adverticement mag to me. New releases and previews are month behind from what the net have access to. Modelling articles are nothing like the standards it used to have. Battle reports are awful compared to years before.

Oh thats why i stopped subscribing to them , the way its going now, WD should be free -_-

If WD spotlighted a couple armies every month (1 from 40k, 1 from WHFB) with well-written stories and compelling fluff extensions, then I might buy it once in a while.
For example, a couple years ago there was a WD that had an "Index Xenos: Dark Eldar" article in it loaded with tons of cool new fluff, followed by an article written by a very successful DE player giving all sorts of good information about how to vary your play style. I bought it. And I NEVER drop money for WD. If they did something like this regularly, they might at least get the fans of these spotlighted armies to buy their magazine.

As it is now, I refuse to pay GW to advertise to me.

Usually in the past when i used to subscribe, they give blister of free limited edition stuff ( for example GD figure of that year )

but if i whine and complain about not wanting that, they have given me 1 $35 box of troops i choose. ( but i think it was $30 back when they didnt raise the
price so much )
