Man, used to be you could get a mini-dex for that much!

Man, I wish there was a real Black Library where I could get a Black Library Card and take out Black Library Books without having to buy them. Of course, late fees would be your soul. But it would be worth it. - InquisitorMack

i rather miss the old days of 'White Dwarf,' when they covered more than just their own product.
That being said, I still enjoy the magazine enough to subscribe but i do wonder how much longer it will be able to stay aflot.
Not having advertisement revenue necessitates a higher price and I imagine that, as time goes on, they're probably selling fewer and fewer copies and are in the middle of a downward spiral they've been in for a while, now.

Those would be the really old, old days.

I'm with you though - I subscribed for 2 years about 6 months ago.

Not sure what I'll do when it is up, but I know which way I'm leaning.

There better be one hell of a deal come then...

I'm a (former) Brit, and I do care that WD has degenerated from a solid hobbyist magazine/catalog hybrid to just a catlog while the price has steadily risen. I wish GW'd put all the stuff they used to have on Black Gobbo (Army Profiles, modelling tips, special scenarios etc.) in WD between some of the ads so as to make it worth buyig again. It's sad when a bunch of websites doa better job than the official magazine of GW to make GW'as hobby interestign seeming.

Its actually £4.50 for a single issue here in the UK.

http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/armySubUnitCats.jsp?catId=cat1290179&rootCatGameStyle=books

GW are generally still pricing US$ stuff at a 2:1 exchange rate which sucks for US buyers right now as the £ has done a nose dive and is nearer $1.40:£1 these days. GW is such a juggernought though, its pricing strategy can't keep pace with currency fluctuations.

I consider it worth it just for the cutaway Stompa poster. And the WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH!!!!!! that I heard rumbling deep in my black little heart when I saw the Kustom Stompa entry. And all the different Stompaz assembled for the battle report. One of them has an entire battlewagon for a head! I think I peed a little when I saw that!

Yeah, but isn't a centerfold supposed to be in the center? Not at the front.. That would be a frontfold and that just doesn't have any swagger to it.

I miss black Gobbo. I miss that kind of content. For $9 it isn't worth the glossy paper it's been printed on. I liked the last one that had the painting faces, and the Orky Stratagems, but it was not enough to warrant the $8 I spent on it.

I guess that's why I'm a member of Dakka we have some awesome people here doing some nice articles, and it free.

This is a shout out to all our members who do a better job for free than the schleps @ WD you get paid for their awful work.

As a new player to 40k, I've enjoyed the White Dwarf's for the battle reports, tips on painting, and details about the different races. However, at $9 an issue I could buy a new codex every two months for the same amount of money and learn in greater detail about the different races.

Also, the battle reports in White Dwarf have cool pictures but are generally hard to follow and lack any meaningful strategic analysis. There are bat reps here on Dakka that are much more professional.

Agreed. It's a piece of crap; save you're money and they might turn it around. The redshirts give me spiel about how it's getting much better, I'll believe that when I see it.

I really should be spending my time more constructively.

But wait, if you're not buying it, how will you see it?

For what its worth, it certainly doesn't offend me, especially at the price and subscription deal I got a ways back...

At times, I find I even enjoy it, a bit.

Not exactly a ringing endorsement, I know, but certainly not a complete lambasting either.

To be fair, it hasn't advertised other companies' products in what, 20 years? It's time to get over that. I also think that there's some rose-colored glasses being worn here. While I fully agree that you can point to past issues that are far superior to anything seen today, not every issue 10 or 15 years ago was a keeper either.

HOWEVER, I haven't subscribed in years, and almost never buy it anymore after paging through it.

Ultimately, generating magazine content takes a lot of time. GW just doesn't seem interested in making the investment in WD by either having the designers spending more time doing magazine articles or by increasing the editorial staff dedicated to it. Like a lot of things in the hobby right now, it's targeted mostly to newbies, and as such probably gets the "good enough" stamp internally.

GW probably agrees with us that hobby Web sites, etc. do a better job giving veterans the content they want. But purely from a sentimental standpoint, it's awfully sad to see what's happened to the old rag.

Against my better judgement I renewed my subscription when it ran out an issue or two ago. I only enjoy reading at most half the content so it was with heavy heart that I sent the money in.

It didn't end up all bad though. For a 75$ renewal the number of subscriptions has gone from 12 to 15. I guess the GW mag year is now 15 months? $5.00 an issue while not ideal due to content is still a lot better than $9.00.

I liked Black Gobbo at $0 per issue. If they could combine that content with current WD I'd pay $5 per issue for a subscription.

I just have to endure the This is not a library! look in my GW. And with the current number of articles worth reading in WD, this tends to be a mere fleeting glance

Wow, I took out a subscription with a resubscribe to secure my copy before the price increase, but with the Stompa issue, I can honestly tell you you're not missing anything.

I wish I had gotten the three-year resubscribe deal my friend did a few years ago. Back then it was worth it.

Honestly, they just do the price increases to scare vets into picking up the mag. This time, I got the short end of the stick. As others have pointed out, Black Gobbo did hobby articles better, and the articles that are left are just scraping the bottom of the barrel.

I knew it was going to be bad when they put out that article soliciting submissions, but they specifically went out of their way to say there would be no compensation for submissions.

Fine Scale Modeller features the ocassional GW figure, this month it's a Greater Daemon of Tzeentch. In my opinion, it's not painted that great (all their other content is waaay better) but it just goes to show there are other places to go to get your hobby fix.

I'd pay $9 for a monthly dose of GW-approved fluff. I mean, isn't that what a $30 or $22 codex really is? If all I wanted was the rules section from a codex, I could get that from Army builder or somewhere else, but its the OFFICIAL somethingness off it all PLUS THE FLUFF which also fits in the officialness of it that makes it worth it. I mean, how many times have we heard people refer to Cypher in the BT codex or some other obscure reference makes us buy a codex for an army that we will never play as our own? How many of us can turn around right now and from where you're sitting see a wall of codices? That's what White Dwarf should get in to. Expresso shots of BLACK LIBRARY canon for the masses! 'Cause I don't wanna be fifty years old and still be ordering novels from BL in order to see a Primarch return. Common guys (you GW important-title holders), gimme the dirt; its bad enough it's gonna be 2012 before Horus makes it to Terra!

Heh gotta agree at times its been fairly good (the Index Astartes First Founding Series) and it's mildly better. (I now usually buy it rather than not). Part of the problem with WD for me though is you can get a similiar quality of articles from the web on their own site let alone anywhere else.

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. It's because we are what we are. For all our faults we stand for law and light.

For example, a couple years ago there was a WD that had an "Index Xenos: Dark Eldar" article in it loaded with tons of cool new fluff, followed by an article written by a very successful DE player giving all sorts of good information about how to vary your play style. I bought it. And I NEVER drop money for WD. If they did something like this regularly, they might at least get the fans of these spotlighted armies to buy their magazine.

As it is now, I refuse to pay GW to advertise to me.

While I'd like to see that every now and again, I'd like to see GW step down from the 'must be tourney style' game tactics and go back to the have a game, a beer and a good time. Not the current, hey douchebag, you can't do that, but watch what skullduggery I'm gonna lay on your candy a89... I'd like to see a resurgence of hobby articles, stories and stuff that makes the rag more inticing to all. And Yeah, that means some tourney stuff.. As much as I hate that.. I'd put up with it.

Is that what the latest Black Library publishing schedule is telling us?

Ouch!

Though I guess no one should be surprised, given how successful the series has been.

Which makes the fact that GW still hasn't put out 'proper' pre-Heresy Space Marine armor models (in plastic, of course! Please?) all the more shocking.

Maybe even a game set in the Great Crusade?
