I finished the first square to see how my envisioned process would work. All in, it probably took 45 minutes of effort. I think I can crank out the other 5 boards in 2 hours.

The brown flocking is the grass. I'm not going to flock the entire board because the primary users are a pair of 6-year olds who have a tendancy to put cars and other toys on the board. More flock and static grass, while aethestically pleasing is going to result in me cleaning more crap out of the carpet.

It's actually darker than the pictures would indicate, because of the flash.

For such a small kid, you do some really good painting. And putting together such a nice website, I never thought someone so young would be capable of that

I do suggest hitting all the flocked areas with several coats of matte coat. I've found that elmer's (PVA) doesn't do a very good job of holding flock down over the course of usage. Matte coat saved several boards of mine.

It demonstrates an effort made to be understood, and to make your post an easy and pleasant read. By making this effort, you can often elicit more positive responses from the community, and instantly mark yourself as someone worth talking to.

Not slippery at all. I put the board down with a couple of plastic figures and they didn't slide at all. Where you have problems, as with any slope, is top heavy figures (swooping hawks, metal storm boyz, etc). Most of my plastics are weighted on the bottom, so they hold pretty well. Also, agreed that it needs a good coat of sealer. That will be done once the weather improves.

I wanted to be the one to make that joke. Oh well.

I've been thinking about being a sucker and buying this thing. In your opinion, would you say it needs the flock at all? I usually don't like the look of it, and if I got one I'd probably go for more of a barren, post-apocalyptic look. Not too far off from how you've painted it really. I'm also not quite sure what I think about the skulls.

I don't think it needs 100% flock. I think some it nice, but in my case, I made a decision not to use it. I might still add some spots of static grass, but i'm still noodling that.

Very nice looking board there. Ice scapes are always hard to do, I think, but yours works very well.

I agree that you don't strictly need to flock the hills, but depending on the mass of your models you might want to. I find metals tend to slip around a bit, and anything on a flight stand is practically on a sled.
Which would be really cool to model for your snowy hills, actually

There is a spray you can buy which gives a textured surface.

Heh, it's not really an ice scape, it's khaki covered with a sandstone. Goal is more of an arid desert look.

Most of my figures are plastics with weighted bottoms.

Rustoleum makes a number of textured sprays too.

I can't wait until I can share this hobby with my son. He just turned 2, so I have a bit.

The board looks excellent.

It's a great hobby to share with the kids. I think I started when they had just turned 5 (at least that's when they found the figures). However, you're going to have to accept that your figures are going to take some abuse. I caught them shooting at some space marines today with their catapults ... they lost their minis privileges for the day.

The reason I was asking is that it might feel a bit silly to not put anything on it. Then it would just be a plain block of plastic that I paid 250 bucks for. You might as well just use a naked table then. On the other hand, some textured spray might be good, and it would get covered in other terrain pieces. I hear it's quite sturdy as well.

On a side note, your kids aren't so bad. When I was a kid I would set my models on fire after painting, if it was a poor job. And that would happen quite frequently. Why they got punished for my incompetence, I can't really explain.
