What army is the cheapest to play, as well as the most fun?

Ork.

Cheapest because you can buy a couple of black reach boxes for $60 apiece, trade out the space marines inside for someone elses' orks, and have a veritable 2,000 points available for <$200.

Also, Orks are the wildest-ly fun army to play with a huge variety of crazy things that they can do. Random attacks, funny moves, and quite powerful in the grand scheme of things.

Tau. The upgrades you can give the battlesuits/tanks etc are just so cool. Sensor spines, awesome. Marker-lights, pew. Stealth-fields.. just quite a few really cool rules.

Orks - they're cheap (as long as you have a reasonable bits box) and great fun to play. And then there's black reach, as dashofpepper pointed out.

necrons are about in the middle cost wise but its awsome when your opponant kills 2 squads of your warriors and you roll we'll be back and half or more of them come back. their face is priceless. lol

I personally find that with Black Reach I layed my hands on two fun armies. Originally, I planned just to get rid of the marines but after reading the new codex abit i stumbled across the

Master of the Forge

and the abilitiy to field 6 (six!) dreadnoughts!


That is fun and awesome, I think. Of course, SM are not as random as orks are (speaking of warpheads, shokk attack guns, carreening trucks, ...)

Plus.. by the time youve finished painting the last one, you shouldve gotten pretty good at it!

Until you realize that you're playing 40k v5, and you realize that he just killed you in HTH, so you just got a LD check with a negative one million modifier and you get wiped.

Err, Orks are are half-assed random compared to what they used to be. Sure SAGs and Warpheads are random, but all of their effects are useful (especially with the Warphead since you can reroll your D6 power roll).

But nobody would or should use ANY of the units listed above for competitive games (except Trukks, they're generally very good at what they were made for).

Fact: 5 out of 4 people play SM.

I'd say 'Nids. They have the best value large box and two of them make for an excellent army. You can hit 2k pts. for just $360 before any discounts. Otherwise marines from the Black Reach box make for a pretty fast and easy army. Though you'll need to buy some transports.

Instead of trying to pitch for my favorite army, the orks, I'll just say what I usually say when someone wants to start up a hobby, be it 40K, FB, or Magic.

To decide which army you want to play, you shouldn't go for what is "cool", because depending on who you ask, every army in the game is the coolest. Money-wise, most armies are about the same, with perhaps the exception of those all-metal armies or the ones where you have to buy conversion kits from ForgeWorld.

I think that you should pop down to your FLGS and see what other people are playing, study a few of the games to get the feel of how the different armies work, perhaps look at some fluff or ask some of the people there why they have chosen their particular army. Think about what attracted you to the hobby, and which army represents that the most.

Then go and buy Orks.

Space Marines are the coolest fluff-wise and also the cheapest if you are going to buy the new starter box.

i deffinately think tau. there annoying as hell for your opponent and they have better stratedgys and veriateys then any other army. i mean marines are a wing it army orks. charge in to close cxombat neckrons slowly get in to combat well firing to taunt there enemys and i know some say tau are just shoot the opponent but you have all kinds of ways because nt one tau players tactics are the same as the next
