Well, I was trawling through the new White Dwarf, and noticed something interesting. On the Shadowswords datasheet, it states that the Sponson lascannonscan be replace with targeters (+1BS) at no extra cost. However, it also say's that the Shadowsword can take extra sponsons at +xxxpts. Does this mean we can get a BS5 shadowsword for as little as 550pts? I( don't know about this, but I thought it was an interesting proposition that The Imperial Guard players on here might like.

lol i dont think so. i think the spirit of the rule means that you have to take 1 or the other. that would be sweet though

so where should this BS 5 come from?

basic gear = 1 set of sponsons.

replace lascannon at sponsons with targeters => Heavy bolter in sponsons get +1 BS
take another set of sponsons => no additional BS until you replace the lascannons on these sponsons too.

I don't believe it was written as "the shadowsword gets +1 BS" if fielding any amount of targeters.

No no, the whole Tank gets +1BS from the targeters. Which replace the lascannons. But if you have 2 sets of lascannons (because you but extra sponsons) then you have 2 sets to exchange for targetters. So that means you can have 2 sets of targeters, and 2 +1BS's.

And what makes you believe that targetters stack with themselves? Having two sets would clearly do nothing more than mean you have some spares to use should some be lost...

Depends on the way the rule is written.
Does it say it can exchange the sponsons for +1 BS, or that it can exchange a pair of sponsons for +1 BS or something else?

How it reads determines what it does.

If you buy extra sponsons, then it says you exchange sponsons for targeters (without saying how many), you just traded in all those upgraded sponsons for no reason).

Got the WD today so i'll have a look:


Shadowsword:

-may take from IG vehicle upgrades......

-may replace sponsons with enanced side armor....

-may add 2 sponsons with.....

-may replace the lascannons with targeters.....

-may add a front HB....

-may upgrade to ....


So i think the order of possible upgrades shows the targeters as option AFTER adding sponsons.
This could hint on:
-All sponson lascannons are replaced with targeters
-one set of sponsons can replace lascannon with targeters, double choice won't add anything
-as mentioned sponsons + lascannons, it could be 2 or 4 of them.

But it doesn't say "replace one set of lascannons",Or "each set of targeters adds +1 BS".

IMO its a +1 BS once,no matter how many targeters you have.

I agree... It seems like the spirit of the rule is +1. My question is this: You're replacing sponsons with targeters, can the targeters be destroyed if you had a weapon destroyed result? As in, are the targeters where the sponsons used to be or do they just become a piece of wargear? I'm not too familiar with Guard things but I'd like to learn more...

The targeters look like the small turrets ontop of the sponsons (but with sensors,not gunbarrels) and replace the lascannon-turret.
Not seen the targeters in plastic yet, FW model isn't that different in design.
So you replace the small turrets with other small "turrets".The Sponson itself with HB or HF isn't changed when adding targeters.
Targeter a weapon to be destroyed? No.

Thank you for the explanation... I guess I was shooting feebly for the stars, but at least now I have a very clear vision of what a targeter looks like on a stormsword.
