Spread out your units first off. Secondly, I'd keep some kroot around as counter charge unit. Even if they aren't infiltrating they are pretty good cheap meat. I know they've always been a pain in my ass an ork player having them skulking around the out-field waiting to counter charge my boys. That's all I've got. Oh, and plasma rifle battlesuits will chew marines up and spit them up if you have enough of them.

Kroot aint a counter assault unit- poor Ld and easy to cut down sees to that. They can, however, be a very effective assault screen.

Instead of assaulting your opponents unit, surround them with kroot. Force them to either assault the kroot or go round them for a turn or two. This buys you an extra turn of shooting, providing of course that the kroot get cut down in one round. A squad of 10, naked, is perfect for this. As an added bonus they will also give any squad behind them a cover save (and you can remove your opponents cover save with markerlights).

The same thing can be done with firewarriors, but kroot tend to do it better (cheaper).

Alternatively, go second in dawn of war or start in reserve and half of your opponents drop pods will waste their surprise potential.

SmoovKriminal had it already, Kroot are a good counter-charge unit, his words. Offensively they can be effective with hounds against non-dedicated CC troops (slightly) but otherwise thier a good meatshield.

Personally, I think that the answer to drop pods and dreads popping onto your lines are suits. My army lists usually has 1-2 teams of suits with plasma/fusion combos. With suit mobility, there's no reason that you shouldn't be vaporizing anything that drops on your line.

Of course, that's presuming that you don't make a huge fireline that extends across the entire board....
