Subject: Changing the Rules for Extra Armor Upgrade

In the Space Marine Codex page 103 the official rule for the Extra Armor upgrade is as follows:
"Vehicles equipped with extra armor count Crew Stunned results on the Vehicle Damage tables as a Crew Shaken result instead."
This is the only benefit of Extra Armor? In my opinion there really isn't any point in this upgrade, epically for a cost of 15 points.
So what is everyone's thoughts about changing the rule (in a friendly local game) to state:
* Vehicles equipped with extra armor modify the roll on the vehicle damage table by -1.
I would also propose this additional rule:
* In addition to the effects of a mine field, any vehicle that triggers a mine suffers a +1 modifier on the vehicle damage table.
This also helps to represent the blast hitting the weaker under-armor of the tank.
And searching the forums looking for Extra Armor rules debates I found these proposed rules related to this topic:
* In addition to their normal effects, Dozerblades add +1 modifier to a vehicles ramming attack.
* In addition to its normal effect, a Siege Shield adds +1 armor to the front of the vehicle.
These proposed rules about the Dozerblade and Siege Shield need to be considered when discussing the change to the Extra Armor rule.
And now to complain about how a tank must remain stationary to fire all of it's heavy weapons, but I'll save that for another topic...

Extra armour is good for troop transport, but overpriced as said.

In third edition, Extra Armor was king. So, in typical penduleum fashion, it's now overcosted and not as useful.

What? Extra Armour Useless!
Heresy!
For Dreads and Rhinos its a MUST HAVE item.
For Dreads its to make sure you can Charge into combat with your S10 goodness (yes being unable to shoot still hurts but still S10 Goodies!) while for Rhinos its needed to get the Squad to where you need it and lets be honest a Storm Bolter that never fires cause you're always moving 12" isn't exactly game breaking, so its no big loss if you cannot fire.
Exactly the same reasoning on Land Raiders, but even BETTER since they can be Stunned all ya want, and with Extra Armour can then go off to move 12" and STILL FIRE!
To Quote a good friend of mine, "OH YEAH!"
On the Awesome Pillboxes that are Vindicators, Preds, Whirlwinds (Pillbox++ imo) and Anything else, yeah its beyond Pointless. Only Upgrade any of them should ever take is the Siege Shield on the Vindicator, and even then only if you know theres gonna be a lot of terrain.

How about for extra armor, attacks from assault affect the facing armor, rather than as if attacking the rear armor? Also, results of less than 1 on the damage table are negated? Increased cost for transport vehicles, as it is a good upgrade for transports and other vehicles who's ability to shoot is secondary, or a secondary ability is still adequate (vehicles with serious assault abilities).

Just because anyone agrees with anyone, doesn't mean they are correct. Beware the thin line between what is "Correct" and what is "Popular." |
