Subject: Grots vs. Kans for screening

What do you prefer for your mobs? Grots or Kans? I've seen battle reports where peopel using Kans had their Kans torn up. I understand the idea is their front and side armor is invincible to small arms fire but yet they still don't seem to hold up well.
In all cases a Mek backs up the mobz.
And if you do run sloggers, what is your opinion about backing them up with Lootas? How do you kit out your Kans? What does your list look like? (last questions optional, I'm really mostly interested in whether or not to use kans or grots)

Kans aren't invulnerable. If there's no other vehicles in the list, even with a 4+ KFF Obscurement save every big gun hammering the Kanz is going to knock them out 1/4 of the time. However, 9 Kanz with a flanking Trukk and the Big Mek in a Battlewagon gives opponents much more to deal with.
If all you're bringing is footsloggers and the screening units, I'd go with a big unit of Grots. If you have a quasi mech force with Battlewagons/Trukks I'd go with the Kans.

Yes, I should have elaborated. Kanz alone are a waste of points. 9 kans screening 60 boyz while a boss with a nob retinue in a wagon and a couple of trukks hit the other flank is how you do it.

The Kans are invincible to small arms fire - that is, bolt guns and the sort since they're only S4 and the front and side armor of the kan is 11.
Wouldn't a kan line slow down a battlewagon and trukks? Wagons move 12", kans 6".

When you take trukks, kans, and battlwagons, you're not using the kans as screening units for your vehicles, so they don't slow them down.
Honestly - kans have no business in a foot slogging list. Point wise, a foot slogging list doesn't have room for accompanying trukks, battlewagon, and kans in plentitude enough to justify taking them to screen foot slogging orks, unless your foot slogging unit consists of pretty much just 1 unit...in which case the army has a bad strategy going on.
When I make a shooty army, I take kans. 45 Lootas, 2 squads of shoota boyz, as many kans (or dreads) as I can fit.
When I take a foot slogging army, I take gretchin for screening.
When I take a mechanized army, I take a mek with a KFF for cover, or I use a battlewagon for screening, and occasionally for giggles, I throw gretchin in there too for screening.
I don't try combining the three army themes - they work out well apart, but not combined.

Hello. I run dread mob with 9 kanz with rokkits, 60 shootas, 30 slugas, 12 lootas, 5 kommandos, mek and 10 boys to capture my objective. What can i say? None of my opponents can deal with 9 kanz even only 6 of them obscured. If you hit them you roll not only 6 on penetration roll, but 1 and 2 and other. If i do not save them, then you roll shaken and stuned and weapon destroed results. I don care about this results. I just push forward and assault with them as soon as possible.
I vote for kanz, 'couse grot do not save you from rhino full of sisters with 3 templates. Grots are not the weapon, just shield. But kanz are not that kind. They kill, shoot, stomp, terrify and discourage enemy when they saw how you roll all the cover saves )))))
