Still haven't picked it up, since I don't have enough money to do so.

From what I've seen on Gamespot, it has literally the worst opening video I've ever seen in a videogame. And I thought the opening music for Tekken 5 was bad.

Child of the early 90s. Ha ha ha, I was born in 75. I bought it!

I played Street Fighter since the original, heck I played Karate Champ! Anyone remember this:

Boy it makes me feel old, (I think this is where Ken and Ryu's colors came from) ha ha ha...

Anyway, yes I got it. Here are some comments:

Playing the game with some of the new mechanics is challenging with a 360 controller. One is going to need to use the triggers and they have a very long springy pull, which isnt very suitable for the split second timing of a fioghting game. I invested in the 6 button controller, and it changed the experience for me! The game is filled with new technical concepts, (well some are old overs from other SF titles and some are new, but they feel new to the SF2 through SF Alpha or Marvel Capcom style players)

Some technical points:

There is a super gauge; very familiar to building up energy to perform a super combo
There is dashing; a short hop with a double tap of the controller
There is a series of of extra hit moves that take a section of the super gauge and require 2 buttons be pressed
Throws are different, there is extra animation and they are executed with the 2 fast attack PK buttons and a direction
Throws can be "tech'd" or evaded if the target also does a throw
There is super armor, charge moves that absorb a hit then strike
There are armor "breaker" moves which cancel super armor
There is EX canceling which interupts the animation of moves and allows players to insert combos where normally impossible (this is hard an foreign feeling to me)
Air Guard is gone
There is a new revenge meter which does...?

All of these concepts ad up to a game with a load of new angles for play. They are exciting concepts but they are difficult to practice so far, as the training dummy isn't really good for much. For example, it doesn't seem to have a way to continually throw armor attcacks at you so you can practice armor breaker timing. Also the game doesnt seem to include any way to learn combos, but reading online quickly reveals that the best combos involve dashing, ex force canceling, and supe combo chains, which the game doesnt really explain at all.

I also bought the brady games guide. It has some excellent explanations of these new concepts, where I got most of the sumations I wrote here from, but it doesnt really list out the combos are give much explanation on the depth of the indivdual characters.

I have only played the AI on medium. I would not expect to do well vs an experienced player who had even reudimentary command of armor, breaker, ex canceling and dashing. Vs the AI:

I had a fight vs Sagat where he tech'd 8 throws, every single one, in a single match, even after I evaded or blocked his super combos
I had a fight versus Sagat where he super charged into a chain combo for half my life where I normally would have blocked after a safe move in what seemed unavoidable
I had a chunli fight where she ex cancelled into a mega kick combo that hit over 10 times for 50% damage
There is a new character who seems to be able to do pile driver throws from across the screen.
Throwing the AI after they miss or have an unsafe attack blocked almost always results in a tech'd throw where you get no damage (like a missed dragon punch for example)

Its a very different game. The skills I thought were solid in old versions of SF are not adequate anymore.

Anyone else have a take?

Bought it and love it to pieces, brings Street Fighter into a new era which can't be a bad thing.

The Revenge Guage allows you to perform Ultra Combos which are devastatingly powerful and have some pretty awesome animations.

Also if you play the Challenge Mode "Trial" it shows you how to perform these combos, starting with the basic moves like Fireball or Dragon Punch and then moves up to the harder stuff once you have a concept of each characters basic moves, only done it with Sakura so far and she is turning out quite quickly to be my favorite character has Ryu's moves but abit faster to boot.

All in all its a solid fighter I just hope Tekken 6 can compare up to this because Street Fighter 4 is one of the best games I have played in a long long long time.

Bought it and love it. It is closer to street fighter 2 than street fighter 3 but as mentioned above it adds or improves on a lot of features. I wish it had the bonus rounds though :(

Sakura eh? Great!

I have been struggling to learn the new techniques with a familiar Shotokan character. Perhaps I'll have to try Sakura again...

I agree, I have been really enjoying it also!

I know its really odd, I don't know why but I've found Sakura to be a character I really enjoy playing as - same fighting style as Ryu but a little bit faster and with some entertaining moves her, ultra combo is ace that being said i really should try out some of the new characters, C Viper looks pretty good, and re learn all my Chun Li and Guile Fu again arrgh so many things to do with that game its untrue.

Dude where have you been? Of all the games it's got by far the most nuanced gameplay. If a one armed guy leaps into the air and hurls a ball of energy the size of the sun at you? You parry through it and stomp him. Some of the insane things that can link... It's a game that rewards inventiveness. Plus you've got to love a system that grades your fights.

This man speaks the truth!

I won't be getting SF IV until I can get my hands on some of the 6 button controllers that sold out the first day in every store and online. Didn't expect that. Now they are going for $90+ on amazon and ebay.

YO DAKKA DAKKA!

I've watched some gameplay videos... it certainly looks like it feels a bit more like SF2... which is a pity, because I'm a fan of SF3. Some of the super-combos are a bit crap... although it's good to see that Akuma's one-hit is still in there.

I personally don't like it. It's too padded and goofy for my taste. I'm more of a Mortal Kombat man myself.

I will not lie:

SF4 tempts me to pick up an xbox almost exclusively for this game. There's something about the throwback to SF2 (never cared for much of the series past SF2: Turbo) that my inner-child can't resist. I sucked something fierce at the game, but I'll be damned if I don't love the game.

Just so long as the CPU Guile can't do f'in Sonic Booms while moving forward. That was always BS.

The AI in fighting games always pulls BS out of its hat. In Soulcalibur, it does moves that are actually impossible, and in Mortal Kombat, it can switch weapons and commit hara-kiri in a split second.

I rented it, had some fun with it, but it got old fast. I'm more of a king of fighters and samurai showdown guy. Got soul calibur 4 and it is by far the best of the next-gen fighters.

Kof XII in june though, maybe it will be able to get a mainstream release off the back of street fighter 4's success.

Well, the game kind of punishes you for not being born long enough ago to devour the games in your youth. It's pretty damn punishing to New people, and just... pretty demoralising. I know you can practice, just I think for many people getting your face kicked in by a guy who takes an hour just to learn how to dodge his opening move is not the sign of a fun game.

What are you on about? Mortal Kombat is the least padded and goofy game I've ever played. Tearing people's arms off and slapping them with them isn't 'padded'. By 'padded', I mean unrealistically nonviolent. I mean, for the sake of realism, why don't people bleed when you repeatedly stomp on their face? I have seen someone's nose literally explode all over their face from being kicked, so why doesn't SF emulate this?
