My current armies are all based on shooting and often avoid close combat or only use it to mop up remaining models.
So what I’m looking for now is one or two armies that are based on getting up in close quarters and slicing the enemy to pieces.

So other than Orks, what other army would excel in the close combat style of play I’m looking for?

CHECK OUT MY NEW ARMY PROJECT BELOW....

Birmingham - England

Nids - stealer shock, hormie horde (not so viable in this edition), CC Fex's of Doom

Chaos - Khorne....need i say more

Dark Eldar - Wych Cults

Eldar - take your pick with the Elites Aspect Warriors/Harlies

When you give total control to a computer, it’s only a matter of time before it pulls a Skynet on you and you’re running for your life.

Tyranids - Genestealer centric with monstrous creature garnish.

Chaos Daemons - Khorne or Slaanesh (or a combination of the two)

Dark eldar - wyches and incubii

Eldar - Banshees, Scorpions, and Harlies. May suffer without backup shooting.

Locally, there is a player with a Mechanize Blood Angels army that is absolutely brutal in assault. I've been hammered by BA's with WS5 and rerolls to hit. My nob Bikers were absolutely crushed.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

Chaos Demons anyone? They all deepstrike.....

As a BA player, I can't honestly rank them as elite in HTH. Dante, Corbulo and the Death Company are nice, but the vanilla marines have their own HTH tricks with some of the chapter masters and the Vanguard.

Tyranids are dirt cheap point-wise for the amount of CC damage they bring to the table. I typically play horde-style orcs, and the tyranids put me in an awkward position of having to shoot my way into a good situation on the battlefield. That's usually the same as saying I'm in a bad situation since orks don't have the best shooting skills in the game.

Khorne certainly brings the pain as well, but their units are off the chart expensive. You can make genestealers cost over 20 points a unit, too, but I think a naked genestealer is enough to scare someone. The rest is just bonus.

Chaos Daemons, expensive, hard to use

nids, Lots to paint and build and buy

orks, lots to paint and build and buy

tau... haha no j/k

I would say Daemons, orks, and nids would be fun. Although you can make any list to do hth... it just isn't always great.

You can do some very good close combat oriented armies with the blood angles codex.

I have my Nids and am starting up on my Black Templars. Templar are more expensive but its hard to argue with their survivability. Take some Assault Terms with Lighting Claws and tear into that Nob squad. I had 5+Marshal pile out of a Land Raider and tear through them b4 they knew what Hit them. Pain Boy included, though /w power weapons they didn't get much of a chance. Just remember to give them Furious Charge and the I5 will be reroll to Hit (From a vow) re roll to would S5 WS4 4 Attacks Each nightmare for anyone.

And because of the lightning claws you got 4 attacks each, str 5, I5, reroll to hit AND wound, no saves.. Enjoy your aids whoever recieved the charge

IMO shrike makes them a lot scarier than Vulkan. Mobility is better than pure killiness any day of the week, especially on a unit that's already plenty killy.

Why did the berzerker cross the road?

I'd say it depends on how much painting you want to do.

Lots: try gargoyles and flying warriors for a different type of tyranid attack

Little: throw as many TH/SS terminators on the board as you can

Yeah, I've seen Tau give Khornate armies absolute fits in CC. "They're dying faster than I can kill them!" Nothing more pissed off than a Berzerker who killed 30 soldiers by himself, but didn't actually get to HIT anything.

i am surprised that no one has stated the Space Wolves, the entire army is built to get into close combat, and the Blood Claws start at 14 pts per model, and if you have enough of them, you can toss in 3 power fists plus a wolf guard with other dangerous weapons, like lightning claws and a SS/TH, i have used a 13 man blood claw squad with a wolf guard in terminator armor with a thunder hammer and SS, they assaulted and by turn two of the assault had kill lysander in close combat, yes i lost a bunh but, in the end he was just over whelmed and that is what horde armies are made for, and against nids i could see the 3+ save easily pushing them into the green even if they assault second, each power fist gets three hits all the others get 4 (a +2 for charging) and got to love being the only marine chapter with a leman russ in your dex even if its not as good as it once was, it can lay a hail of medium punch fire power, 3 heavy bolters and a twin linked auto cannon can easily eat up light army and troops with no problems at all

Just do Fatecrusher lists. They are kings of HtH.

Perturbed Blood Angel Tactical Marine

I play a Blood Angels list and it rocks in CC. They're like Khorne berserkers that move 12" and have more power weapons.

Tyranids are really good too. They have the most options for CC.

Khorne CSM aren't really up there anymore.

They used to be able to move an extra d6" then charge.

They lost that, making them slow, and orks get Waagh making them fast.

Khorne troops are also off-the-charts expensive, which combined with how slow they are at assault, means someone shoots your rhino, you foot slog berserkers across table, they get shot to death and die like normal tactical marines, then they take out maybe one unit in CC then get finished off.

If I was serious about a CC-army, I would go with one that has cost-effective melee stuff and speed (such as Fleet of Claw for tyranids, or Waaagh for Orks. Khorne Daemons might also count as speed because of deep-striking an entire army, but I haven't played against them. Apparently Daemons seem to be a one-trick pony relying on nothing but spamming BloodCrushers.)
