Subject: An interesting situation: when units die at strange times.

I was playing a game last week, and we had a huge scrum in the middle of the board (my Black Legion vs. his Iron Warriors). At the beginning of my opponent's turn my Daemon Prince died due to a perils of the warp when he tried to activate his Warp Time. This left a squad of his CSM and his daemon prince unengaged with any of my units that were still in the combat (two squads of my own CSM and one squad of his terminators).
I don't have my rules book with me, but I suggested and we played that his units had to use the "defenders react" portion of the CC phase to move into B2B again. However, I get the feeling that "defenders react" is only actually in reaction to assault moves. As no new assault moves were made, I think that they'd have to wait until the end of the CC phase to pile in.
But, I think that they also might simply not be locked in CC any more.
What do you think?
Do they move to engage during "defenders react?"
Do they move during the "pile in?"
Or are they simply not members of the combat any more?

If no models are engage in close combat, I would say the the close combat was over and all units originally involved would follow any remaining post-close combat actions reguard by whatever phase they are in.

There were still four units locked in combat, just two of the units became unengaged when the only model in B2B with them died.
Also, please support your statement with rules (page numbers, quotations, etc.)

If the Units that became unengaged ended up more than 1" from any enemies, they would considered not locked in combat, since for a unit to be locked in combat they have a model in BtB with an enemy Page 35 "Who can Fight wrote:Units that have one or more model in base contact with enemies are said to be 'locked in combat'

After getting home and looking through my rulebook, I'd have to say that you're right Gwar. I feel kind of bad now, because if we'd played the right way my opponent would have had a bit of an advantage that turn.

These things happen.
He'll ive been playing for years and I remember the first game against necrons I faced. We played it so he phased out right away instead of waiting for WBB. I didnt know that at the time because I wasnt playing it, yet I still felt bad (especialy since he did a mock WBB and got all of them back after the game lol)

Warptime is used at the very beginning of the turn right? As in before movement?

Plus, if they suddenly find themselves outside of 1" of the enemy and not touching, you can still shoot them or run them! It doens't say you can't shoot or run if you were touching someone at the beginning of the shooting phase.
This actually happened to me once but in a slightly different situation. My DP of nurgle Aura of Decayed the last enemy marine in a combat and my Plaguebearers were then free to run. Nowhere could we find anything that said different.
Now, if you are not Locked and yet are still within 1" of an enemy, I'm not sure what you'd do.

Well in that case I would consider them still a part of a combat. It's a grey area to be honest, and the most logical solution is to count distances of <1" as BtB contact imo
