If anyone here watches Lost, did you happen to notice that in the last few episodes there have been a couple, inadvertant I imagine, 40K names. I was going to use "references" but that is definately the wrong word, coincidences maybe.

The gentleman who drove Locke around when he came back from the island's last name was Abbadon, and the head of the Dharma Init. in 1974-77's name is Horus. When I heard these I started craking up, and had to explain to my wife why....dork check...
I then proceeded to surmise that at some point Horus will betray everyone, and be a general a-hole.

I imagine they just got the names from the original sources that GW did, but I find it amusing all the same.

It now makes me want to go back, watch it all again to see if there is a GW fan laying easter eggs all through the show, or if it is truly a wierd coincidence

Abaddon is an abrahamic demon, Horus is an egyptian god, Dharma is from indian religions. Ever since Evangelion, religious and mythical names are used in pretty much everything these days, and GW is definetly no slouch in that department.

I never said all of them were. The lizardmen also make a reference to Transformers.

But using mythological names is nothing new.

Except that you've got one of the names wrong. Horace was the name of the dharma head. ;

Religious and mythical names have been everywhere in fiction since WAY before Evangelion was even thought of. There was no revelation brought on by Eva that made people suddenly think of them, it's a phenomenon that stretches back hundreds of years, not to just 1995.

Yes, but Eva made it cool. Not to mention that Eva was that series that over did it to the point of near-stupidity. Still a good series, although some of the religious references were just plain stupid.

Nothing new Lost has always been full of Religious and Mythological references.

All true, I still just thought it amusing that Abbadon and Horus show up a week apart.

Lost has taken pages out of many books. Lord of the Flies for example. It's a bunch of unoriginal ideas thrown together in a way to confuse you, I'm pretty sure the writers don't even know where they are.

lol to both...

@ Reaver, I missed those references....darnitall....now I have to fine tooth comb the seasons again...Although isn't Hugo's middle name Nurgle?

@ Faux, I think I'm going to have to agree with you. I wonder how many of them stay up at night fretting about how to make it work...I must say it makes for good, intriguing television because if the writers don't know whats going to happen next, how are we to guess??

The real beauty is that they don't even need to make it work. All they have to do is keep us intrigued/obsessed and throw enough stuff at us to break our brains to the point where we don't realize it doesn't actually work.

Like the X-Files did back in the day.

Am I the only one who isn't keen on the more overtly spiritual plot developmental direction on both Lost & BSG?
