Hey I'm completely new to 40k as a tabletop game but have been painting for a while and now I want to start up an Ork army, mainly for their looting of enemy tanks, I think that's amazing!

But my question is what are the limits on the looting thing? Can I just go mad and put all my nobz in termie armour or is it strictly tanks? Can dreadnoughts and walkers be looted?

Sorry for my ignorance but I won't get a chance to get at a rulebook/codex for a few weeks when I get paid up.

Cheers, Dave.

Well, you could do that, but they'd have to "count as" something else.

In this case, most likely as Mega-Armored Nobs.

"Counts as" will be your friend if you decide to 'loot' (i.e., covert) anything other than, well, the Looted Wagon.

Still, as long as everything is made clear at the start of a battle, it shouldn't be a problem!

This is info that GW gets a little annoyed if people give out. I would just recommend that you wait until you can get the codex, because even if they know (which I don't) and are undaunted by the thought of getting shut down by GW, most people aren't very interested in posting longs lists of information that can easily be found by just looking in the book.

You could also try going to the FLGS and checking their customer open copy, if you just want to look up one thing.

I think we're a bit confused as to what you mean by looting, and you should get the codex if you haven't already. Model wise, orks have always had the most leeway in using a kit from another model range to represent on of their models. Rhinos as trukks, landraiders as battlewagons, that sort of thing. I think with AoBR being so popular, looted dreadnoughts are going to come into play pretty often. Make sure you follow two simple rules: 1) it must look looted, and 2) it must still be armed with what the Ork book says it's armed with, not what the original model was armed with. So, for example, if you loot an AOBR dreadnought, you would need to add two more arms, because Ork Dreadnoughts have two arms. If you loot a rhino to use as a trukk, you need make it open topped and replace the storm bolter with a big shoota or rokkit.

In terms of rules, Orks can no longer wholesale take a unit from another codex and play it. They used to be able to take a tank from IG or Space Marines and play it, but not anymore. They have a unit called "looted wagon" that allows you to custom build a looted tank, often not as good as it was in the enemies hands but you can replicate most things reasonably well.

AS for nobs in terminator armor, you can't use the terminator rules, but there is a unit called Mega Armored Nobs that have something close to terminator armor. You could build your MANz with plastic SM terminator armor if you wanted (and a lot of people do just that).

A Battlewagon also works for a Leman Russ or Land Raider based vehicle.

Anuvver fing - when they do sumfing, they try to make it look like somfink else to confuse everybody. When one of them wants to lord it over the uvvers, 'e says "I'm very speshul so'z you gotta worship me", or "I know summink wot you lot don't know, so yer better lissen good". Da funny fing is, arf of 'em believe it and da over arf don't, so 'e 'as to hit 'em all anyway or run fer it.

Wow, thanks for all the replies people and with such speed!

You've really helped a lot, my concern was basically that I want to get a little creative with the models but would also like to keep them playable.

I had heard about the playing other races tanks thing and it makes sense if it was allowed a few years ago as the friend I heard that from was into it a lot years ago but lost touch with it for about ten years, as I have.

But yeah, you've all been very helpful! I'm gonna proceed and stick a gretchin, some levers and lights inside an XV88!

I don't suggest looting terminators, unless you're going to put a LOT of work into them.
Check out a Mega Armored Ork in comparison to a Termie. The orks are a LOT bigger. Looted Termie armor will look weedy, unless a LOT of work is put into it.

I agree SM terminators are pretty scrawny compared to a mega armored nob.
But yea you can use alot of different things to represent Ork stuff. Looted wagons are pretty bad ass. The armor isnt great but you stick a boom gun on there and you got a serious piece of death there. Im going to buy a box set of black armored Orcs from fantasy and convert them into a mega armored nob squad.
Orks are a great army for converting to your wildest dreams. Good luck

Cheers guys, I got myself a codex from somewhere so I've been reading up and they do seem good for conversions. Good Times.

As far as SM termies go they are a bit small yeah but I'm gonna see what I can do there. There's always room for something.

That sounds really interesting about the WHFB Ork conversion, you'll be doing a WIP blog I hope?

Cheers,

Dave
