Ok, so I played my first game against drop guard the other day, running a Deathwing list of Belial, A Librarian, an Apothecary w/ the Belial squad, and 5 squads of termies w/ 3 assault cannons and 2 cyclone ML's, and 3 venerable dreads with missile launchers and multi-meltas. My standard 2k list ATM.
Anyway, he had 2 full platoons with a plasma in each squad, and 3 command squads with 5 meltas. He also had 2 outflanking squadrons of 3 sentinels w/ las cannons and HK Missiles.
Needless to say, I got roflstomped. Mostly because I failed 13/17 invuln saves from his plasma.
Im really at a loss of what to do about going against that army. He got really lucky on his deep strikes, as only 1 of his squads got a mishap.

Unlucky matchup really.
BTW, out of 17 invulnerable you should fail 11.333 anyways, so not that unlucky.

Remember that the Apothecary does let you ignore one failed save so you do get one ignore vs. plasma.
Other than that, you know you're going against drop guard, castle up in cover and then wipe him off the board when he lands. It only takes a few surviving Terminators to wipe out lots of IG squads.

It was actually a little worse than that, I kept a tally and looked over it just now. I only passed 2 the entire game, one on my librarian and one with my seargant.
Edit-
Also, none of his plasma died until turn 5, with over 50 shots fired throughout the game.

Your fear is over.
32 or 57 points of DH allies and you crush the IG scum.
Either a 45 point Inquisitor Lord HQ choice with 2 (6 point each) attached mystics or a 20 point Inquisitor elite choice with 2 (6 points each) mystics.
They deepstrike and mystics allow you a free shot at 4d6" range with any unit within 12" of Inquisitor unit. They are dead the moment they hit ground.
Really that simple and that cheap. 32 or 57 points. You could also, deploy in DH Land Raider and blast away with that.

Sure you have deepstrikeable elite units, but none of them are that mobile, get some raven wing: bike with a chaplain, or a land speeder the combination of death wing and raven wing with a heavey support like a whirlwind in their is awesome, I would consider loosing the dreads, but in larger point games maybe not. I think that your main problem is manuverability if anyything definately a chaplain (or possibly librarian, well some sort of character it's up to you really, I just prefer a chaplain with a power fist) on bikes with a squad, that will help against those pesky sentinels, and help you wipe out those guard plasma's and meltas after he has taken casualties and removes the las gunners from your triple auto cannon barrages (or whirlwind barrages as well, they rape guardsmen). Hope this helps. Good Hunting.

Better yet.
Play a elite and HQ of DH with added mystics and two units shoot at IG squads. Overkill, but job is done. Funny thing about it.... You shoot them on their turn. So you can survey the carcasses on your turn

Playing against this list in a tourney is prolly really hard with Deathwing.
Out range him, assault cannons and storm bolters are evil, getting more shots at a higher BS and S.
Also, since you get to deepstrike first, take up all the open area, this goes for when going against any other deepstrikers also. limit his area to deploy in, try to take up as much space with your guys, you may not have a lot of models but twice as big bases. Dangerous terrain when DSing may only happen on 1's but you make them roll enough of em and thats a considerable amount that don't get to do jack.
There is no real garuntee win against drop guard with DW but your best bet is make his drops worse because you get on the board first.

I would just hold everything in reserve and walk them on the board. This would take away any advantage that the guard has on you.

That would have been smart. Or I could have deployed in my corner, making a large part of his forces unavailable to deep strike near me due to lack of room, and causing a high probability of mishaps for him.

I don't think that would have worked as well as keeping everything off the board. I find that with any all Deep Striking armies it is best to keep your stuff of the board. They usually don't no were to drop in at and end up makeing a mistake with the drop. It is like giving them a taste of ther own medacine. Plus your force is so small it is easy to overload a flank with them and still have room to manuevar.

Consider yourself lucky that you can spend the points to take the Inquisitor and mystics. I'm playing Necrons, so I don't have access to the inquisitions magical pez dispenser of inquisitors and mystics. Keeping off the board really is my only option. Starting on the board was a really bad choice. Buddy of mine in a 1850 game literally killed every model on the table in round 2. Then again, he had more heavy weapons, special weapons, and demo charges than I had models on the table.
I'm hoping that the new IG codex reduces that somewhat. But I'm also hoping that the standard issue inquisitor and pair of mystics the inquisition is handing out like beads at Mardi Gras gets FAQ'd out sometime soon. It really does shut down an awful lot of opponents options, for way too few points.

Jon, the one that's away at college. Pat mentioned he sold his DW army to someone, and by the look of that list I can only assume you were playing Doug.
