So I was looking over some stuff to build for apocalypse (after the new datasheets came out and got me thinking) and came across the Ares, and it occurred to me that if it did not predate the redeemer it would likely have the Flamestorm cannons rather then the twin linked Heavy Flamers (plus it would be easier to make with the bits I have on hand).

Obviously one could use the flamestorm cannon bits and count them as the heavy flamers, but I'm curious what, if any cost difference would be required to use them as Flamestorms?

I'm inclined to think its a wash; trading the 1 pt of strength and improved AP for a much better to wound ratio (twin linked at str 5 being better against anything of T5 or less), but I'm curious what others think?

Jack

Post the exact weapons stats and any special rules please?

Here is Original Datasheet pdf

The weapon swap I propose would be removing the sponson mounted Twin-Linked Heavy Flamers in favor of the Land Raider Redeamer's Flamestorm Cannons.

Stats:
Both fire templates, ignore cover.

Heavy Flamers (Str 5, AP 4, twin linked so re-roll to wounds)

Flamestorm (Str 6, Ap3)

So the Flamer is better against all models with a toughness of 5 or less (due to re-roll) other the 3+ saves

Flamestorm is better against vehicles, 3+ saves, and toughness 6 or more.

Well, you don't get the re-rolls to wound, but you're not busting MEQ armor. Sorry, but the Flamestorm is obviously the superior choice. It will need a points boost, probably not a serious one though, you are losing that re-roll.

Fair enough.

What do you think 25 points?

Straight swap. No change in cost.

Apoc isn't about balance and number crunching, it's about storytelling and epic battles - so do what you want. It's a Land Raider with some flamers - a drop in the ocean in most Apoc games - I doubt anyone will get upity at you with a swap from TL-Hev Flamer to Flamestorm Cannons.

Thats true, but sometimes we like using the funny vehicles in smaller games as well, where such a small discrepency can have a larger impact.

@ HBMC : One drop here, another there, some more somewhere else, eventually they all add up and you have to go get another pail. 25 points seems reasonable, I would have said 10pts per side, so 20pts.
